Hey Mister, throw me some beads!' is a phrase that is iconic in New Orleans' Mardi Gras street lingo. Strings of beads, doubloons, and other trinkets are passed out or thrown from the floats in the Mardi Gras parades to spectators lining the streets. Between 1974 and 1982, New Yorker Bruce Gilden became a regular of the Mardi Gras scene. The energy, alongside the social and cultural mores of Mardi Gras were all new for him, allowing him to capture the raw intensity of the crowds with an unaffected eye.'

Born in the 1930s, Roller Derby has enjoyed a resurgence since 2002. Several leagues have been formed, most of them for women only, whose sexy costumes emphasising their femininity formed a stark contrast with the roughness of the sport. Players assume alter egos with names like Patsy Crime, Dolly le Dukes, Tawdry Hepburn or Death by Chocolate. Shelley Calton vividly depicts the tempo and emotions of the game, exploring how the players' image demands both a typically masculine attitude and an erotic showcasing of their bodies.

In 1992, Dana Lixenberg travelled to South Central Los Angeles for a magazine story on the riots that erupted following the verdict in the Rodney King trial. What she encountered inspired her to revisit the area, and led her to the community of the Imperial Courts housing project in Watts. Returning countless times over the following twenty-two years, Lixenberg gradually created a collaborative portrait of the changing face of this community. Over the years, some in the community were killed, while others disappeared or went to jail, and others, once children in early photographs, grew up and had children of their own. In this way, Imperial Courts constitutes a complex and evocative record of the passage of time in an underserved community.

This volume presents Bruce Davidson's personal selections from his lesser-known color archive. Ranging from a period of fifty-six years and counting, these images are representative of the photographer's color career. Assignments from various magazines (Vogue, National Geographic, Life magazine) and commercial projects led him to photograph fashion (early 1960s), the Shah of Iran with his family (1964), keepers of French monuments (1988), the supermodel Kylie Bax (1997), and college cheerleaders (1989). He photographed in India and China, but also at home in New York, in Chicago, and along the Pacific Coast Highway. In 1968, Michelangelo Antonioni invited him to document the making of his film Zabriskie Point. Davidson also continued to pursue personal projects, e.g. photographing the Yiddish writer and Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (1972-75), the New York City subway (1980), and Katz's Delicatessen (2004). Often staying on in a country after an official assignment, he documented Welsh coalfields, family holidays in Martha's Vineyard, and travelled through Patagonia and Mexico.
