Why The Dutch Are Different written by Ben Coates and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-24 with Travel categories.

*A SCOTSMAN TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR* Stranded at Schiphol airport, Ben Coates called up a friendly Dutch girl he'd met some months earlier. He stayed for dinner. Actually, he stayed for good. In the first book to consider the hidden heart and history of the Netherlands from a modern perspective, the author explores the length and breadth of his adopted homeland and discovers why one of the world's smallest countries is also so significant and so fascinating. It is a self-made country, the Dutch national character shaped by the ongoing battle to keep the water out from the love of dairy and beer to the attitude to nature and the famous tolerance. Ben Coates investigates what makes the Dutch the Dutch, why the Netherlands is much more than Holland and why the colour orange is so important. Along the way he reveals why they are the world's tallest people and have the best carnival outside Brazil. He learns why Amsterdam's brothels are going out of business, who really killed Anne Frank, and how the Dutch manage to be richer than almost everyone else despite working far less. He also discovers a country which is changing fast, with the Dutch now questioning many of the liberal policies which made their nation famous. A personal portrait of a fascinating people, a sideways history and an entertaining travelogue, Why the Dutch are Different is the story of an Englishman who went Dutch. And loved it.

1940 Haarlem, Holland. With his hometown occupied by the Nazis during World War II, teenage Johan's seemingly normal family hides secrets that repeatedly put all their lives in grave danger. Everyone in Haarlem is told to 'keep their heads down' and they will endure. But is it enough to merely survive? Hidden in Haarlem takes the reader through tense and harrowing true life tales revealed in ninety-five-year-old Johan's memories. This survivor recounts his family's participation in their deadly games of rebellion against the Third Reich when they joined the Dutch Resistance in courageous acts of sabotage and hiding the persecuted. Things get personal when the Gestapo eventually comes for Johan and his stepbrother. The family's hatred of the Nazis is greater than their fear of them. However, a slight miscalculation in judgment by any of them could mean deportation to concentration camps or immediate execution of the whole family. Heroic choices lead to the loss of innocence, an unexpected wartime romance, and family sacrifices for Holland's liberation from Hitler's terrifying regime.

Holland S Life Of Abraham Lincoln written by Josiah Gilbert Holland and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-01-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Soon after the assassination of President Lincoln in April 1865, newspaper editor Josiah Gilbert Holland traveled to Illinois to talk with people who had known Abraham Lincoln "back when." In 1866 Holland published the earliest full-scale life of the fallen leader. A great popular success, Holland's biography introduced American readers who were hungry for personal information about Lincoln's early life to some of the most famous and enduring Lincoln stories. From Holland the reader learned about Lincoln making restitution for a ruined book, the railsplitter earning his first silver dollar, the millhorse's kick to his head, the wrestling match with Jack Armstrong. Holland relayed homey stories about the young Illinois legislator and lawyer and poignant ones about the president during the dark days of the Civil War. Holland was one of the earliest biographers of Lincoln to insist that Lincoln had always opposed slavery and had planned consistently for emancipation. Most debatable, from the viewpoint of some later historians, Holland demonstrated that Lincoln was "eminently a Christian President." To understand the sixteenth president and the making of his public image, it is necessary to begin with Holland's Life of Abraham Lincoln. J. G. Holland (1819-1881) was editor-in-chief of the Springfield (Mass.) Republican and founder of Scribner's Monthly. Introducer Allen C. Guelzo is the author of The Crisis of the American Republic: A History of the Civil War and Reconstruction Era. He is Grace F. Kea Professor of American History and chair of the History Department at Eastern College in Pennsylvania.
