This volume examines selected works of German literature from Gustav Freytag to Joseph Goebbels in relation to ethical, socio-economic, and political texts from the economic «take off» period in the middle of the nineteenth century up to the rise of National Socialism and investigates two aspects of anti-Semitic anti-capitalistic representations contained therein. First it traces how the Jews gained the dubious distinction of being the inventors, even embodiment, of capitalism and elaborates on negative traits assigned to both of them. Second it examines how representations of specifically Jewish capitalists were instrumentalized both to discredit laissez faire and simultaneously to assist in the definition of a specifically «German» socio-economic ethos.

By the mid-twelfth century the lands on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, from Finland to the frontiers of Poland, were Catholic Europe’s final frontier: a vast, undeveloped expanse of lowlands, forest and waters, inhabited by peoples belonging to the Finnic and Baltic language groups. In the course of the following three centuries, Finland, Estonia, Livonia and Prussia were incorporated into the Latin world through processes of conquest, Christianisation and settlement, and brought under the rule of Western monarchies and ecclesiastical institutions. Lithuania was left as the last pagan polity in Europe, yet able to accept Christianity on its own terms in 1386. The Western conquest of the Baltic lands advanced the frontier of Latin Christendom to that of the Russian Orthodox world, and had profound and long lasting effects on the institutions, society and culture of the region lasting into modern times. This volume presents 21 key studies (2 of them translated from German for the first time) on this crucial period in the development of North-Eastern Europe, dealing with crusade and conversion, the establishment of Western rule, settlement and society, and the development of towns, trade and the economy. It includes a classified bibliography of the main works published in Western languages since World War II together with an introduction by the editor.

This volume sets out a novel approach to theatre historiography, presenting the history of performances of Greek tragedies in Germany since 1800 as the history of the evolving cultural identity of the educated middle class throughout that period. Philhellenism and theatromania took hold in this milieu amidst attempts to banish the heavily French-influenced German court culture of the mid-eighteenth century, and by 1800 performances of Greek tragedies had effectively become the German answer to the French Revolution. Tragedy's subsequent endurance on the German stage is mapped here through the responses of performances to particular political, social, and cultural milestones, from the Napoleonic Wars and the Revolution of 1848 to the Third Reich, the new political movements of the 1960s and 1970s, and the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification. Images of ancient Greece which were prevalent in the productions of these different eras are examined closely: the Nazi's proclamation of a racial kinship between the Greeks and the Germans; the politicization of performances of Greek tragedies since the 1960s and 1970s, emblematized by Marcuse's notion of a cultural revolution; the protest choruses of the GDR and the subsequent new genre of choric theatre in unified Germany. By examining these images and performances in relation to their respective socio-cultural contexts, the volume sheds light on how, in a constantly changing political and cultural climate, performances of Greek tragedies helped affirm, destabilize, re-stabilize, and transform the cultural identity of the educated middle class over a volatile two hundred year period.

In the context of "knowledge of the enemy", various Nazi organizations established research and schooling centers on Judaism. Alfred Rosenberg, in particular, competed with the SS for books and other materials plundered from the occupied territories. Describes the organization of the Nazi regime in the Czech Protectorate and the SS Zentralstelle für jüdische Auswanderung (later Zentralamt für die Regelung der Judenfrage) under Hans Günther. The Jewish Ältestenrat in Prague was responsible for all the Czech Jewish communities. One of the Council's main duties was to sort and store the valuables confiscated from Czech Jews: furniture, clothing, and ritual objects. It was decided, probably at the initiative of the Council with the assent of the SS, to use some of the more outstanding objects for the establishment of a Jewish museum, based on the small prewar museum and the synagogues of the Old City. This museum soon housed the largest collection of Judaica in Europe. Describes the organization and work of the staff and the exhibitions, which were probably seen only by Nazi and SS officials. Günther interfered very little, but the staff was constantly decimated by deportations. Speculates on the SS's motives for permitting the establishment of this museum. Suggests that Günther, who also commissioned the Theresienstadt film, may have taken personal pride in it. It may also have fitted in with Heydrich's apparent plans to turn the Protectorate into an SS state with a university in Prague; future SS officers should know the enemy that still lurked in the rest of the world, though exterminated in Europe. Traces, also, the fate of other collections of Judaica, such as those at the RSHA or at Rosenberg's Institut zur Erforschung der Judenfrage in Frankfurt.
