This book is dedicated to “High-Performance Eco-Efficient Concrete” and concrete fatigue behavior, more sustainable construction materials, capable of complying with quality standards and current innovation policies, aimed at saving natural resources and reducing global pollution. The development of self-compacting concretes with electric arc furnace slags is a further achievement. In addition, the technical and economic viability of using coarse recycled aggregates from crushed concrete in shotcrete, enhanced quality and reduced on-site construction time are the basic features of prefabricated bridge elements and systems, biomass bottom ash as aluminosilicate precursor and phosphogypsum were discussed. On the other hand, basalt fiber improving the mechanical properties and durability of reactive powder concrete, alkali-activated slag and high-volume fly ash and the potential of phosphogypsum as secondary raw material in construction industry, the effects of fly ash on the diffusion, bonding, and microproperties of chloride penetration in concrete were studied. Increasing amounts of sustainable concretes are being used as society becomes more aware of the environment. Finally, the circular economy as an economic model of production and consumption that involves reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling materials after their service life are presented in this book.

Eco-efficient concrete is a comprehensive guide to the characteristics and environmental performance of key concrete types. Part one discusses the eco-efficiency and life cycle assessment of Portland cement concrete, before part two goes on to consider concrete with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Concrete with non-reactive wastes is the focus of part three, including municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) concrete, and concrete with polymeric, construction and demolition wastes (CDW). An eco-efficient approach to concrete carbonation is also reviewed, followed by an investigation in part four of future alternative binders and the use of nano and biotech in concrete production. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, Eco-efficient concrete is a technical guide for all professionals, researchers and academics currently or potentially involved in the design, manufacture and use of eco-efficient concrete. The first part of the book examines the eco-efficiency and life cycle assessment of Portland cement concrete Chapters in the second part of the book consider concrete with supplementary cementitious materials, including properties and performance Reviews the eco-efficient approach to concrete carbonation

Since ordinary self-compacting concrete (SCC) is usually associated with high material costs due to its high binder and chemical admixture content, researchers are currently attempting to produce SCC with high volumes of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), to make it cost effective and more durable. The SCMs used in this type of SCC, namely fly ash (FA), ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), silica fume (SF), metakaolin (MK) etc., are generally industrial by-products and waste materials. A subsidiary effect of this SCC composition is to conserve the environment and non-renewable natural material resources. This chapter reviews the current literature on fresh properties of SCC containing high-volume SCMs, and explains the effect of high-volume SCMs on the mechanical and durability-related properties of SCC.

New Trends in Eco-efficient and Recycled Concrete describes different recycled materials that have been used in eco-efficient concrete, reviewing previous publications to identify the most effective recycled materials to be applied in concrete manufacture. New trends on eco-efficient concrete are presented, filling a gap in the market. Sections cover various recycled materials applied in concrete production, present the latest on the lifecycle analysis of recycled aggregate concrete, detail new trends in recycled aggregate concrete research, and finally, present updates on upscaling the use of recycled aggregate concrete and structural reliability. Focuses on new trends in recycled aggregate concrete and its applications (rather than the more subjective ‘sustainability’ aspects) Contains very important contributions from researchers in eco-efficient concrete, including Chi Sun Poon, Jorge de Brito, Valeria Corinaldesi, Francisco Agrela, etc. Presents a ‘one stop’ reference for a graduate course on sustainable construction

This chapter discusses strategies for mitigating CO2 emissions from the concrete chain. Current strategies, which focus on cement production processes such as clinker replacement, kiln efficiency, fuel substitution and CO2 capture, among others, are not effective enough to compensate for the increase in production that is expected to occur in the future. Binder use efficiency is therefore a crucial strategy for decreasing environmental impacts. Exploratory data from literature, real market and lab research indicates that the potential for decreasing emissions from the concrete chain is very high, and will require changes to the formulation and processing of concrete, as well as the production of aggregates, cement and fillers.

Carbonation is a major cause of concrete structure deterioration, leading to expensive maintenance and conservation operations. The eco-efficient construction agenda favors the increase of the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to reduce Portland cement's consumption and also the use of recycled aggregates concrete (RAC) in order to reduce the consumption of primary aggregates and to avoid landfill disposal of concrete waste. A wide range of literature has been published in the field of concrete carbonation related to the use of SCMs and/or RCA. Fowever, the different conditions used limit comparison, and in some cases contradictory findings are noted. Besides, since most investigations are based on the use of the phenolphthalein indicator, which provides a poor estimate of the real concrete carbonation depth, there is a high probability that past research could have underestimated the corrosion potential associated with concrete carbonation. This chapter reviews current knowledge on concrete carbonation addressing carbonation depth measurement and the use of SCMs and RAC.

As the environmental impact of existing construction and building materials comes under increasing scrutiny, the search for more eco-efficient solutions has intensified. Nanotechnology offers great potential in this area and is already being widely used to great success. Nanotechnology in eco-efficient construction is an authoritative guide to the role of nanotechnology in the development of eco-efficient construction materials and sustainable construction. Following an introduction to the use of nanotechnology in eco-efficient construction materials, part one considers such infrastructural applications as nanoengineered cement-based materials, nanoparticles for high-performance and self-sensing concrete, and the use of nanotechnology to improve the bulk and surface properties of steel for structural applications. Nanoclay-modified asphalt mixtures and safety issues relating to nanomaterials for construction applications are also reviewed before part two goes on to discuss applications for building energy efficiency. Topics explored include thin films and nanostructured coatings, switchable glazing technology and third generation photovoltaic (PV) cells, high-performance thermal insulation materials, and silica nanogel for energy-efficient windows. Finally, photocatalytic applications are the focus of part three, which investigates nanoparticles for pollution control, self-cleaning and photosterilisation, and the role of nanotechnology in manufacturing paints and purifying water for eco-efficient buildings. Nanotechnology in eco-efficient construction is a technical guide for all those involved in the design, production and application of eco-efficient construction materials, including civil engineers, materials scientists, researchers and architects within any field of nanotechnology, eco-efficient materials or the construction industry. Provides an authoritative guide to the role of nanotechnology in the development of eco-efficient construction materials and sustainable construction Examines the use of nanotechnology in eco-efficient construction materials Considers a range of important infrastructural applications, before discussing applications for building energy efficiency

The volume of polymeric wastes such as tyre rubber and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is increasing at a fast rate. An estimated 1000 million tyres reach the end of their useful lives every year and 5000 million more are expected to be discarded in a regular basis by the year 2030. Only a small part is currently recycled and millions of tyres are just stockpiled, landfilled or buried. As for PET bottles annual consumption is over 300 000 million units. The majority is just landfilled. This chapter reviews research published on the performance of concrete containing tyre rubber and PET wastes. Furthermore it discusses the effect of waste treatments, the size of waste particles and the waste replacement volume on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete.
