Most high performance structures require the development of a generation of new materials, which can more easily resist a range of external stimuli or react in a non-conventional manner. Formed of research works presented at the 10th International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials, the included papers cover issues involving advanced types of structures, particularly those based on new concepts or new materials and their system design. Contributions highlight the latest developments in design, optimisation, manufacturing and experimentation. There is also a focus on the search for higher performance sustainable materials. Particular emphasis is placed on intelligent structures and materials as well as the application of computational methods for their modelling, control and management. Optimisation problems are also covered, including those related to the size, shape and topology of structures and materials. Optimisation techniques have much to offer to those involved in the design of new industrial products. The development of new algorithms and the appearance of powerful commercial computer codes with easy to use graphical interfaces has created a fertile field for the incorporation of optimisation in the design process in all engineering disciplines.

Papers presented at the 2018 International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials are contained in this volume. These papers address issues involving advanced types of structures, particularly those based on new concepts or new materials and their system design. The use of novel materials and new structural concepts nowadays is not restricted to highly technical areas like aerospace, aeronautical applications or the automotive industry, but affects all engineering fields including those such as civil engineering and architecture. Underground Spaces written by C. A. Brebbia and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Architecture categories.
It is a strongly held belief that population growth and the demand for better accommodation and leisure facilities, combined with a desire to improve the landscape, will result in the need to develop more underground spaces. This phenomenon, which started in countries subjected to extreme climates, is now becoming more widespread. Underground spaces are being utilized for a wide diversity of needs. They range from classical excavations to subway constructions; underground sports halls; power stations; waste repositories; underground cities, and many others. Their construction techniques are also varied, from open-air excavations to newly developed injection methods. The response of the underground structures on the imposed loadings depends on a number of parameters that sometimes are too complex or not fully understood, resulting in budget overruns or even failures that lead to loss of property or life. Such uncertain cases need to be addressed and engineers should be able to accurately predict the construction's performance throughout its construction and service life. The First International Conference on Underground Spaces discusses not only structural and environmental material characterization aspects but also the trends regarding the utilization of underground spaces. This book contains papers presented at the Meeting, and covers a wide range of topics including: Use of underground space for industry; Underground power stations; Toxic and nuclear waste repositories; Energy underground reservoirs; Underground sewerage plants; Waste storage and management; Road and railway tunnels; Utility tunnels; Fire defence; Defence against terrorist attacks.

Micromechanics In Practice written by Michal Šejnoha and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Technology & Engineering categories.
The book will concentrate on the application of micromechanics to the analysis of practical engineering problems. Both classical composites represented by carbon/carbon textile laminates and applications in Civil Engineering including asphalts and masonry structures will be considered. A common denominator of these considerably distinct material systems will be randomness of their internal structure. Also, owing to their complexity, all material systems will be studied on multiple scales. Since real engineering, rather than academic, problems are of the main interest, these scales will be treated independently from each other on the grounds of fully uncoupled multi-scale analysis. Attention will be limited to elastic and viscoelastic behaviour and to the linear heat transfer analysis. To achieve this, the book will address two different approaches to the homogenization of systems with random microstructures. In particular, classical averaging schemes based on the Eshelby solution of a solitary inclusion in an infinite medium represented by the Hashin-Shtrikman variational principles or by considerably simpler and more popular Mori-Tanaka method will be compared to detailed finite element simulations of a certain representative volume element (RVE) representing accommodated geometrical details of respective microstructures. These are derived by matching material statistics such as the one- and two-point probability functions of real and artificial microstructures. The latter one is termed the statistically equivalent periodic unit cell owing to the assumed periodic arrangement of reinforcements (carbon fibres, carbon fibre tows, stones or masonry bricks) in a certain matrix (carbon matrix, asphalt mastic, mortar). Other types of materials will be introduced in the form of exercises with emphases to the application of the Mori-Tanaka method in the framework of the previously mentioned uncoupled multi-scale analysis
