Enhanced sensitivity radio telescopes are producing dramatic results. An international conference was held in Jodrell Bank to take stock of these advances. This timely volume presents the review articles presented by a host of world experts who gathered at this meeting. We are shown how high sensitivity is advancing our understanding in radio spectral line analysis, radio continuum observations of galaxies, cosmology, pulsars, and radio emission from stars; what new and enhanced instruments are now available and those planned for the future. This volume provides graduate students and researchers with an up-to-date and wide-ranging review of the new and future research possible with high-sensitivity radio telescopes.

In this volume are collected scientific research reports written in recent years at the Radio-Astronomy Laboratory in the field of radio-astronomical apparatus and methods of ob servation. Modern radiometers of high sensitivity, using masers and parametric amplifiers, have been installed at the R T-22 radio telescope of the Laboratory's Radio-Astronomy station. Some of the papers are devoted to a description of these original radiometers and to their operating conditions. Considerable space is given to a description of the meter-wave equipment and to the ad justment of the DKR-1000 diapason cruciform radio telescope. Two papers describe radio in terferometers with radio relaying. This method of increasing the resolving power is extreme ly effective and it is expected that it will be further developed under laboratory conditions, primarily in the meter wave range. Problems of radio-telescope design occupy an important place in contemporary radio astronomy and radio engineering. Three articles are devoted to this important line of work. In 1966, an experiment was carried out at the Radio-Astronomy Laboratory on the inves tigation of the solar wind by a radio-astronomical method. The experiment gave substantially new data concerning the nonuniformity of the plasma around the sun; the experimental part of the work carried out is described in the collection.

The genesis of IAU Colloquium 182, 'Sources and scintillations: refraction and scattering in radio astronomy,' can be traced to the desire, on the one hand, of Beijing Astronomical Observatory radio astronomers to organize a conference which would highlight the need for high sensitivity - as a way ofpromoting their own project to build the world's largest telescope (FAST) - and to a suggestion from Ron Ekers on the other. During a discussion with the two SOC co-chairs (as they then were not) in January 1999 in Epping, Ron noted the success ofa meeting on 'radio seeing' in Beijing in 1989, and wondered whether the time might not be ripe to organize another conference devoted to radio propagation. This set the ball rolling, and with enthusiastic input from SOC members, a successful application was made to the IAU. Later, the URSI also agreed to co-sponsor the meeting. From April 17-21, 2000, over 80 astronomers from a dozen countries met in Guiyang, China, to discuss the latestexciting results and theoretical ideas on radio propagation through interstellar, intergalactic and interplanetary space. These pro ceedings include almost all (95%) ofthe oral presentations given at the conference. In addition to the 52 talks presented during 5 days of the Colloquium, Ron Ekers gave a fine summary at the end to tie things up. There were also poster sessions where some twenty papers were displayed. Besides the scientific sessions, the LOC had organized a program for spouses and otheraccompanying persons.

Discover a modern approach to the analysis, modeling and design of high sensitivity phased arrays. Network theory, numerical methods and computational electromagnetic simulation techniques are uniquely combined to enable full system analysis and design optimization. Beamforming and array signal processing theory are integrated into the treatment from the start. Digital signal processing methods such as polyphase filtering and RFI mitigation are described, along with technologies for real-time hardware implementation. Key concepts from interferometric imaging used in radio telescopes are also considered. A basic development of theory and modeling techniques is accompanied by problem sets that guide readers in developing modeling codes that retain the simplicity of the classical array factor method while incorporating mutual coupling effects and interactions between elements. Combining current research trends with pedagogical material suitable for a first-year graduate course, this is an invaluable resource for students, teachers, researchers, and practicing RF/microwave and antenna design engineers.

Radio surveys play an important role in observational cosmology. However, until recently the surveys have been either of wide area but with low sensitivity or of small area with high sensitivity. Both limit the kinds of cosmology that can be carried out with radio surveys. This situation has been revolutionised in the past few years by the availability of new, large-area, high-sensitivity radio surveys at both low and high radio frequencies. These significant improvements allow studies based on both the statistics of the surveys themselves and multiwavelength follow-up of the galaxies and AGN responsible for the radio emission. It is therefore an opportune time to summarise progress in this field with a workshop. This book comprises the proceedings of the `Observational Cosmology with the New Radio Surveys' workshop, held on Tenerife, January 13-15, 1997. Topics covered include: lessons learned and important results from earlier surveys, descriptions of some of the new surveys, clusters of galaxies and large-scale structure, radio source evolution, CMB studies, gravitational lensing and multiwavelength studies of distant radio sources.
