Andy Bellin is a pretty good poker player. Over the ten years he's been playing semi-pro, millions of dollars have passed through his hands. He's the kind of guy who can walk away from the table $5000 up. He's also the kind of guy who can drop $9000 - on a single hand. On his way to a master's in astrophysics, Andy Bellin made the fatal mistake of falling in love with poker. Too many years down the line, he's resurfaced from a life spent in high-rolling casinos and low-rent dives to tell us the tale. Part memoir, part expos-, Poker Nation is a mesmerising journey through the ups and downs of being a gambler, a trip to a world where the only thing 'weirder than a poker player is the guy sitting next to him'. -At once a witty history of the world's most popular card game, a how-to manual that really will make you a better player, and the story of one man's obsession, Poker Nation will leave you sharper, wiser, and maybe even a little richer.

In 1979, Florida Seminoles opened the first tribally operated high-stakes bingo hall in North America. At the time, their annual budget stood at less than $2 million. By 2006, net income from gaming had surpassed $600 million. This dramatic shift from poverty to relative economic security has created tangible benefits for tribal citizens, including employment, universal health insurance, and social services. Renewed political self-governance and economic strength have reversed decades of U.S. settler-state control. At the same time, gaming has brought new dilemmas to reservation communities and triggered outside accusations that Seminoles are sacrificing their culture by embracing capitalism. In High Stakes, Jessica R. Cattelino tells the story of Seminoles’ complex efforts to maintain politically and culturally distinct values in a time of new prosperity. Cattelino presents a vivid ethnographic account of the history and consequences of Seminole gaming. Drawing on research conducted with tribal permission, she describes casino operations, chronicles the everyday life and history of the Seminole Tribe, and shares the insights of individual Seminoles. At the same time, she unravels the complex connections among cultural difference, economic power, and political rights. Through analyses of Seminole housing, museum and language programs, legal disputes, and everyday activities, she shows how Seminoles use gaming revenue to enact their sovereignty. They do so in part, she argues, through relations of interdependency with others. High Stakes compels rethinking of the conditions of indigeneity, the power of money, and the meaning of sovereignty.

Winning In Tough Hold Em Games written by Nick Grudzien and has been published by Two Plus Two Publishing LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04 with Games & Activities categories.

The recent boom of Texas hold 'em has forever changed the way the game is played. Many more people know how to play this game well. Even the "loose" players who come to gamble have become far more aggressive, making them more difficult to play against. So a basic tight and patient strategy will no longer guarantee that you can make a significant amount of money in games at the higher stakes. This is especially true short-handed, which have become increasingly popular in the online poker rooms. This text is the first to tackle the complex issues presented when playing short-handed and high-stakes limit hold 'em. But even if you happen to only play in softer games, many of the key concepts presented will still help you against the other good players in your game. Winning in Tough Hold 'em Games includes an examination of pre-flop play, covering issues at a depth of sophistication which have never appeared in print before including discussions of blind stealing, re-stealing, isolating a loose player, big blind and small blind defense, and blind versus blind play. Also covered are thorough sections on playing heads-up post flop and semi-bluffing. In addition, over 50 hands, taken from high stakes online games which were played by "Stoxtrader," are presented along with appropriate discussion of the strategy involved. Book jacket.

She needed to know why. So did Hawk Bladehunter, a key player at Marlowe Inc. Join the Rebellion! Ashala Wolf has been captured by Chief Administrator Neville Rose, a man intent on destroying Ashala’s Tribe – the runaway Illegals hiding in the Firstwood. Injured and with her Sleepwalker ability blocked, Ashala is forced to succumb to the machine that will pull secrets from her mind. And right beside her is Justin Connor, her betrayer, watching her every move. The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf is the first book in a thrilling new dystopian series by Indigenous Australian author Ambelin Kwaymullina. With a dollop of adventure and a dash of romance, it will grip young adult fiction readers from the first page. In 2012, this novel was short-listed in both the Science Fiction and Young Adult categories of the Aurealis Awards. Find out what happens next in The Disappearance of Ember Crow (Book 2) and The Foretelling of Georgie Spider (Book 3). Join The Tribe at http://www.thefirstwood.com.au/ “The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf sets itself apart. It is a bitingly clever dystopia, highly imaginative. Where other books fall flat, this one stands out as a startling contemporary example of the dystopian genre … Ambelin Kwaymullina draws thoughtfully on dream, myth, and human nature to create this bleak alternative reality, and her book is utterly compelling.” – Australian Book Review “It is superbly written and is highly recommended ... If I was a fortune-teller I'd predict that this book will be a major success with young adult readers.” – Magpies “Highly recommended. For readers who love dystopian novels, or even those whose appetites are becoming jaded with the plethora that abound at the moment, The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf opens up a new dimension in excitement and thought-provoking themes in this genre.” – ReadPlus “This first teenage novel from an Indigenous author gives The Hunger Games an Australian run for its money … The writing is supple and confident and Ashala is an inspiring role model.” – SA Weekend “The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf is a darn-good yarn. Kwaymullina offers a heartfelt Eco-Dystopian, with a simultaneous guessing-game plot as Ashala’s interrogation reveals the layers of her memory … Kwaymullina leaves Ashala (and readers) not on the precipice of a cliffhanger, but standing on the threshold of a daunting new world that is so intriguing and dangerous, readers will be counting down the days until they can return to Firstwood and Ashala’s Tribe.” – AlphaReader “Need something different to read, something that’s more than just your average YA dystopian? Then find yourself a copy of The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf and discover your own sanctuary and place to feel safe, your own connection to the land you walk upon, and a debut young adult novel like no other. The Tribe is waiting; they need your support.” – Book Probe “There is a wonderful sense of emotional connection to the land through Ashala which really appealed to me. While the thriller aspects of the story keep the pages turning, Ashala’s need to have a connection with her past and with her surroundings as well as her need to be true to herself and those she loves adds a real depth and thoughtfulness to the novel.” – Kids Book Review “An intriguing mix of dystopian society and fantasy with a Dreamtime twist … A fascinating and enjoyable read, both complex and nuanced.” – The Intrepid Reader
