How free-market fundamentalists have shifted the focus of higher education to competition, metrics, consumer demand, and return on investment, and why we should change this. A new philosophy of higher education has taken hold in institutions around the world. Its supporters disavow the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake and argue that the only knowledge worth pursuing is that with more or less immediate market value. Every other kind of learning is downgraded, its budget cut. In Knowledge for Sale, Lawrence Busch challenges this market-driven approach. The rationale for the current thinking, Busch explains, comes from neoliberal economics, which calls for reorganizing society around the needs of the market. The market-influenced changes to higher education include shifting the cost of education from the state to the individual, turning education from a public good to a private good subject to consumer demand; redefining higher education as a search for the highest-paying job; and turning scholarly research into a competition based on metrics including number of citations and value of grants. Students, administrators, and scholars have begun to think of themselves as economic actors rather than seekers of knowledge. Arguing for active resistance to this takeover, Busch urges us to burst the neoliberal bubble, to imagine a future not dictated by the market, a future in which there is a more educated citizenry and in which the old dichotomies—market and state, nature and culture, and equality and liberty—break down. In this future, universities value learning and not training, scholarship grapples with society's most pressing problems rather than quick fixes for corporate interests, and democracy is enriched by its educated and engaged citizens.

The human mind is truly a phenomenal and creative treasure. It has given us dominion over the earth and set us above all the other life forms we share it with. But in so doing, it has isolated in a world of our own making, one that has that has imprisoned and so restricted our awareness to a purely mind-based, lower frequency, ego-oriented assessment of Life. The effect has left us chronically insecure, oblivious to the sacred presence of our Source and Creator, mere shadows of our true Eternal Nature on a never ending quest to be and have more. This dark syndrome has given rise to a truly sinister force responsible for the evil that has plagued this humanity for eons. This book will introduce you to the Higher Knowledge and to the truth that will set you free. Allow its wisdom to end your banishment and liberate you from the illusion of this limited mind-based perspective as it educates, inspires and uplifts mind to the higher frequency of our Source and Creator. That omnipresent Spirit is the essence of this very moment, your true Eternal Nature and the love, unity and peace that is our sacred birth right and spiritual heritage. It awaits you here, in this the ever present Now Moment within the silent stillness of your own very Beingness. Late In January of 1967, a "spontaneous Kundalini rising" would unceremoniously awakened Steven from this dream of Life leaving him a confused and frightened stranger in a world he could no longer recognize of partake in. As time passed, he was able to integrate the higher frequency of the Kundalini energy into his daily life, come to terms with the illusion we have all been born into, and reconcile the conundrum of evil that feeds off the mayhem and suffering inherent in our ignorance and neglect. This is Steven's fifth book and the nature of Consciousness.

Higher education has become a worldwide phenomenon where students now travel internationally to pursue courses and careers, not simply as a global enterprise, but as a network of worldwide interconnections. The Origins of Higher Learning: Knowledge networks and the early development of universities is an account of the first globalisation that has led us to this point, telling of how humankind first developed centres of higher learning across the vast landmass from the Atlantic to the China Sea. This book opens a much-needed debate on the origins of higher learning, exploring how, why and where humankind first began to take a sustained interest in questions that went beyond daily survival. Showing how these concerns became institutionalised and how knowledge came to be transferred from place to place, this book explores important aspects of the forerunners of globalisation. It is a narrative which covers much of Asia, North Africa and Europe, many parts of which were little known beyond their own boundaries. Spanning from the earliest civilisations to the end of the European Middle Ages, around 700 years ago, here the authors set out crucial findings for future research and investigation. This book shows how interconnections across continents are nothing new and that in reality, humankind has been interdependent for a much longer period than is widely recognised. It is a book which challenges existing accounts of the origins of higher learning in Europe and will be of interest to all those who wish to know more about the world of academia.

What does it mean to be human? Human development unfolds in a twofold way. On the one hand, there is an ever-more profound incarnation, or "inhabitation," of the physical body. On the other hand, there is the increasing discrimination of the individual objects of the world. Difficulties and obstacles along this path can lead to so-called disabilities. König's approach to curative education allows us to see these disabilities as meaningful ways of coping with or resolving the various problems that arise in living in a physical body. From this point of view, "disabilities" are exaggerated forms of ways we all use to cope with life. "The point is not only to see the deviations, but to see them against the mighty backdrop of a comprehensive child anthropology." Being Human presents the outline of just such a comprehensive anthropology. Being Human is of value not only to those working in special education, but to anyone interested in the dynamics of incarnation and "normal" development.

Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner (1861 – 1925) was an Austrian social reformer, philosopher, economist, architect, esotericist, and economist. He rose to celebrity during the latter part of the twentieth century as a literary critic and author of philosophical works, later founding a spiritual movement called “anthroposophy” which was heavily influenced by German theosophy and idealist philosophy. Originally published in 1930, this volume explains how different stages of material cognition and higher states of knowledge can be achieved through meditation, concentration exercises, and a connection to the spirit world. This fascinating book will appeal to those with an interest in spiritualism, and it is not to be missed by collectors of vintage spiritualist literature. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

From pressures to become economically efficient to calls to act as an agent of progressive social change, higher education is facing a series of challenges. There is an urgent need for a rigorous and sophisticated research base to support the informed development of practices. Yet studies of educational practices in higher education remain theoretically underdeveloped and segmented by discipline and country. Building Knowledge in Higher Education illustrates how Legitimation Code Theory is bringing research together from across the disciplinary map and enabling practical change in a rigorously theorized way. The volume addresses both students and educators. Part I explores ways of supporting student achievement from STEM to the arts, from introductory courses to doctoral training, and from using new digital media to reflective writing. Part II focuses on academic staff development in higher education, reaching from curriculum design to pedagogic practices. All chapters focus on issues of contemporary relevance to higher education, showing how Legitimation Code Theory enables these issues to be understood and practices improved. Building Knowledge in Higher Education brings together internationally renowned scholars in higher education studies, academic development, academic literacies, and sociology, with some of the brightest new researchers. The volume significantly extends understandings of teaching and learning in changing higher education contexts and so contributes to educational research and practice. It will be essential reading not only to scholars and students in these fields but also to scholars and educators in higher education more generally.
