Highway 101 is a taunt story of a man on the run, afraid, at times seemingly hunted and his own worst enemy. His own demons, planted there by the trauma of having his career destroyed, sees him starting the long climb from living in dirt cellars and abandoned houses, homeless and alone, to great achievement and eventually writing best selling books. Highway 101 is a segment of that long journey to major historical achievement. What they say about Best Selling Author Harrison Edward Livingstone's novels and nonfiction: "A triumph!"-The New York Times about David Johnson Passed Through Here, under the pen name of John Fairfield. About The Wild Rose: "A foursquare sea novel in the tradition of Herman Melville"-Prof. William Alfred, Harvard University. "Very good writing"-the Publisher's Weekly "Monumental Investigation!"-The Guardian "Case Reopened! Killing The Truth contains plenty of new evidence. Even more readable and exciting than his last best seller."-Kirkus Reviews "Gusty no one should miss his summary of the hard evidence for a conspiracy."-Times (London)

A fun-filled look at the history and attractions of California's legendary Highway 101. Now the road has the utilitarian designation of U.S. Route 101, but originally it had a name of romance and mystery—El Camino Real, or the King's Highway, built on the trail pioneered by the Spanish friars and marked by mission bells on the roadside. Illustrated throughout with historic photographs, Highway 101: The History of El Camino Real tells the picturesque story of this great highway and the restaurants, motels, gas stations, and roadside attractions that made it memorable to generations of travelers. From Disneyland to the historic Madonna Inn to the Avenue of the Giants, Highway 101 catalogs the great landmarks along the road, plus the fascinating personalities, from Dorothea Lange to Jelly Roll Morton to Cecil B. DeMille, whose lives intersected with the history of the route. A colorful history of Americana, commerce, travel, and fun, Highway 101 captures the magic of the open road.

U.S. Route 101 is the westernmost highway of the 1926 U.S. Federal Highway System. A north-south federal highway, it "mirrors" U.S. Route 1 on the U.S. east coast U.S. 101 originally connected our borders with Canada and Mexico between Blaine, Washington and San Ysidro, California. It was, and remains, a major north-south transportation corridor serving Washington, Oregon and California. It is also the longest U.S. highway in California. The highway in 2013 serves in the shadow of the much newer Interstate 5. U.S. 101 also survived the Great California U.S. Highway Mass Extinction of 1964. The 377 mile San Ysidro - Los Angeles segment was decommissioned in the 1970s because a parallel segment of Interstate 5 was nearing completion at the time. For his fourth U.S. highway adventure book, Mike Newlon drove his 1969 Porsche 912 southbound on the full surviving 1,540 mile length of the highway. As with his previous books about other U.S. highways, Mike's perceptive eye and digital cameras present readers with the highway and some of its previous alignments. In addition to the highway itself, Mike's book brings readers the historic architecture, the magnificent California Redwoods, the spectacular Pacific Coast and very active geology along the highway.
