Mental Health Spirituality And Religion In The Middle Ages And Early Modern Age written by Albrecht Classen and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-28 with Literary Criticism categories.

This volume continues the critical exploration of fundamental issues in the medieval and early modern world, here concerning mental health, spirituality, melancholy, mystical visions, medicine, and well-being. The contributors, who originally had presented their research at a symposium at The University of Arizona in May 2013, explore a wide range of approaches and materials pertinent to these issues, taking us from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, capping the volume with some reflections on the relevance of religion today. Lapidary sciences matter here as much as medical-psychological research, combined with literary and art-historical approaches. The premodern understanding of mental health is not taken as a miraculous panacea for modern problems, but the contributors suggest that medieval and early modern writers, scientists, and artists commanded a considerable amount of arcane, sometimes curious and speculative, knowledge that promises to be of value and relevance even for us today, once again. Modern palliative medicine finds, for instance, intriguing parallels in medieval word magic, and the mystical perspectives encapsulated highly productive alternative perceptions of the macrocosm and microcosm that promise to be insightful and important also for the post-modern world.

Music In Print And Beyond written by Craig A. Monson and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with History categories.

Fresh and innovative takes on the dissemination of music in manuscript, print, and, now, electronic formats, revealing how the world has experienced music from the sixteenth century to the present. This collection of essays examines the diverse ways in which music and ideas about music have been disseminated in print and other media from the sixteenth century onward. Contributors look afresh at unfamiliar facets of the sixteenth-century book trade and the circulation of manuscript and printed music in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. They also analyze and critique new media forms, showing how a dizzying array of changing technologies has influenced what we hear, whom we hear, and how we hear. The repertoires considered include Western art music -- from medieval to contemporary -- as well as popular music and jazz. Assembling contributions from experts in a wide range of fields, such as musicology, music theory, music history, and jazz and popular music studies, Music in Print and Beyond: Hildegard von Bingen to The Beatles sets new standards for the discussion of music's place in Western cultural life. Contributors: Joseph Auner, Bonnie J. Blackburn, Gabriela Cruz, Bonnie Gordon, Ellen T. Harris, Lewis Lockwood, Paul S. Machlin, Roberta Montemorra Marvin, Honey Meconi, Craig A. Monson, Kate van Orden, Sousan L. Youens. Roberta Montemorra Marvin teaches at the University of Iowa and is the author of Verdi the Student -- Verdi the Teacher (Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani, 2010) and editor of The Cambridge Verdi Encyclopedia (Cambridge University Press, 2013). Craig A. Monson is Professor of Musicology at Washington University (St Louis, Missouri) and is the author of Divas in the Convent: Nuns, Music, and Defiance in Seventeenth-Century Italy (University of Chicago Press, 2012).

This collection of occasional writings by renowned medieval scholar Margaret Wade Labarge considers an eclectic mix of themes and issues in the history of the Middle Ages. The varied lives of medieval women, their power and status within society, are depicted through their own writings; questions of medieval culture are linked to those facing humanity in our time; travel, as experienced by the most prestigious ambassador and by the lowliest pilgrim, is explored; and the origins and conditions of health care are examined. These themes have inspired or informed the author's eight major historical works, but are revisited here with the clarity, wit and discipline of a great teacher. A Medieval Miscellany will give readers already acquainted with Labarge's work new pleasure, and provide an enticing path into medieval lives and time for new readers.
