Little Bighorn is the beautifully written, uniquely American story of the coming-of-age of eighteen-year-old Allen Winslow during the Battle of the Little Bighorn and the fraught weeks immediately preceding it. The novel abounds with memorable characters, including Allen himself, his beautiful sixteen-year-old traveling companion, Addie, and the brave but monomaniacal Gen. George Armstrong Custer. Hough brings to life the American West and heartbreaking history, brilliantly portraying the flawed and tormented Custer. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

During the early weeks of 1848, as U.S. congressmen debated the territorial status of California, a Swiss immigrant and an itinerant millwright forever altered the future state’s fate. Building a sawmill for Johann August Sutter, James Wilson Marshall struck gold. The rest may be history, but much of the story of what happened in the following year is told not in history books but in the letters, diaries, journals, and other written recollections of those whom the California gold rush drew west. In this second installment in the projected four-part collection The Great Medicine Road: Narratives of the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, the hardy souls who made the arduous trip tell their stories in their own words. Seven individuals’ tales bring to life a long-ago year that enriched some, impoverished others, and forever changed the face of North America. Responding to often misleading promotional literature, adventurers made their way west via different routes. Following the Carson River through the Sierra Nevada, or taking the Lassen Route to the Sacramento Valley, they passed through the Mormon Zion of Great Salt Lake City and traded with and often displaced Native Americans long familiar with the trails. Their accounts detail these encounters, as well as the gritty realities of everyday life on the overland trails. They narrate events, describe the vast and diverse landscapes they pass through, and document a journey as strange and new to them as it is to many readers today. Through these travelers’ diaries and memoirs, readers can relive a critical moment in the remaking of the West—and appreciate what a difference one year can make in the life of a nation.

Part II of this document contains some limited ethnographic data on the Ojibwa, primarily focusing on the list of plants, animals, totems, and the texts of various songs of the Ojibwas used in medicine and hunting.

This is Volume 2 in a series on the Indian history of Jasper, covering the early historical period of 1750-1850. The human history of Jasper has historically and archaeologically always differed from that of the rest of the province. Such was still the case at the beginnings of this period, though changes were now on the way, as the Cree, Iroquoias, traders and "Freemen" began to push into this moutain fastness. Though no longer isolated, the Jasper area continued to be distinct, with a mixture of a variety of ethnic groups who eventually came to meld and identify largely as Cree.

MASKI PITON, or Broken Arm, is perhaps the best-known or best publicised Cree Indian Chief, and has had more written about him than any other Chief or historic aboriginal person in Alberta. In spite of this, virtually nothing has been written about - or is known about - his band of the Plains Cree. Much that is known and has been written about him is incomplete and woefully lacking, not having been satisfactorily researched. In fact, the band ranged through a large area from the mountains of the North Saskatchewan to northern Minnesota. In fact, as it turns out, MASKI PITON's band is one of the best documented of the Plains Cree bands and, once we combine the records from Canada and the Untied States, we are able to reconstruct a very accurate record of the history of the band. This is the history of the Band from it's early origins to the reservation period, and is the first documentation of the range of the Plains Cree bands.
