In de hulpverlening aan personen met een verstandelijke beperking is het toepassen van thema’s uit de ontwikkelingspsychologie erg bruikbaar gebleken. De ontwikkelingspsychologie als discipline is een basiswetenschap voor de begeleiding van personen met een verstandelijke beperking. Er zijn dan ook vele begeleiders in Nederland en Vlaanderen die zich inspireren aan de principes van het ontwikkelingsperspectief. Het is niet zozeer de kennis van de fase waarin iemand zich bevindt die belangrijk is. Belangrijker is wat men met deze kennis kan doen in de begeleiding van een cliënt. De draad is een metafoor voor hoe de verbinding tussen mensen groeit doorheen de verschillende ontwikkelingsstappen. Het is een poging om deze verbinding te verduidelijken bij personen met een verstandelijke beperking zodat ouders en begeleiders gemakkelijker het niveau van emotionele ontwikkeling kunnen vertalen naar hun handelen. Het is een begrippenkader dat begeleiders en ouders kan helpen om de emotionele ontwikkeling bij personen met een verstandelijke beperking te concretiseren en te vertalen. Welke draad je het best hanteert, hangt af van de fase in de ontwikkeling die je bij de cliënt herkent. We zetten de stap van ontwikkelingspsychologie naar ontwikkelingsorthopedagogiek, van ‘Wat kan ik weten over de ontwikkeling?’ naar ‘Wat kan ik doen om mij in te voegen in deze ontwikkeling?’ De metafoor van een draad wil helpen om bij de opvoeding of begeleiding de juiste afstemming te vinden, ook als die opvoeding of begeleiding moeilijk loopt. Waar zitten de draden van de cliënt? Met wie en op welke manier is hij verbonden? Welke zijn de intense contacten, en welke zijn de oppervlakkige, inwisselbare contacten? The VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the Dutch East India Company) was the largest of the early modern European trading companies operating in Asia. Its operations produced not only warehouses packed with spices, coffee, tea, textiles, porcelain and silk, but also shiploads of documents. Data on political, economic, cultural, religious, and social conditions spread over an enormous area circulated between the VOC establishments, the administrative centre of the trade in Batavia, now the city of Jakarta, and the Board of Directors in the Netherlands. The co-operation between the National Archives of Indonesia and the Netherlands resulted in this extensive catalogue of fifteen archives of VOC institutions in Jakarta. The VOC records are included in UNESCO ́s Memory of the World Register.

The quality of education is a term that is frequently used in public debates. Understood in the sense of education being “generally okay” , or rather, most frequently, as “not okay”. Perhaps there is an overruling nostalgic view that formerly education was better than today. In scholarly discourse there are those who maintain that the quality of education is an illusive term, with varying interpretations in different settings and by different stakeholders. In this book the complexity of the concept of education quality is recognized, but a conceptual framework is presented that makes quality, despite its complexity, amenable to rational and empirical analysis. Productivity, equity, effectiveness, efficiency and responsiveness of education systems are seen as key facets of quality. A concrete set of indicators is presented that makes for the measurement of these quality facets. In the second part of the book the quality framework is applied to an analysis of the quality of education in the Netherlands. Common sense in the Netherlands is dominated by the view that the quality of education is a course for serious concern. Some recent quality reviews take the same pessimistic outlook. However, the current overview of indicators on the Dutch system, seen from an international perspective, presents a picture that is much more positive. Still there is always room for improvement, in the case of the Netherlands this should probably be sought in diminishing the selectivity of the system as a way to improve participation in higher education.
