Excerpt from A Guide to Elementary Chemistry for Beginners I know of but one way to teach a student how to acquire a real knowledge of nature, and that is, to fix his mind habit ually on things and events brought under his own eye, and direct him to the discovery of facts and principles for himself. The use of apparatus is, of course, indispensable if the student is thus to study phenomena instead of descriptions of phenomena, and the use of apparatus, by himself, is with out doubt the method which is most certain to stimulate his mind to the greatest activity. Laboratory study for students in high schools is rapidly growing in favor, but unfortunately, in many schools where chemistry is taught, the difficulties in the way of this method are still thought to be real. Even in these, chemistry to be truly useful should be presented as a study of phenomena, by experiments, instead of what some body has said about phenomena in books. I have therefore tried to construct a course of experiments suited to the use of the beginner, at his laboratory desk, and to the use of the teacher for his class of beginners, where facilities for students to work for themselves seem to be out of reach. Although not actually indicated in the book, it is intended that every experiment should be suggested and carried out by the pupils, the part of the teacher being only to guide and supervise. At the same time the teacher must reserve the right of selecting the experiment to be done by the class when several have been suggested, and, in this way, preventing time being wasted in trying experiments which would be of little value to the children and which would break the sequence of their work. It will be found that by following this method of procedure, the class can work along the main lines suggested by us, although naturally the work must vary considerably in the hands of different teachers. Excerpt from Elementary Chemical Technics: A Handbook of Manipulation and Experimentation for Teachers of Limited Experience, and in Schools Where Chemistry Must Be Taught With Limited Appliances The office of this little book is expressed in its title. My faith that such a work may be of some service in the cause of science teaching, is founded in part upon a realization of what a valuable adjunct such a book would have been in the earlier years of my own teaching. No attempt has been made to write a text-book of Chemistry. There are enough good works of that nature to meet the requirements of every school. But from a proper regard for brevity, and sometimes from a lack of appreciation of the teacher's needs on the part of authors, text-books fail to give that careful detail of direction which will insure success in experimentation. In the chapter on the Metals I have made no mention of the more rare ones, considering only such as are likely to be worked with in the ordinary school courses. The terms of both the English and Metric systems are used, for I find that the two systems are used about equally in schools, and the tables provided in text-books render the conversion from one system to the other an easy matter. I wish to express my indebtedness to Prof. A. C. Boyden of the Bridgewater Normal, and to Mr. H. W. Tyler of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who have read the manuscript and proof-sheets, and given me valuable suggestions in my work.
