Nicht nur die Begeisterung für den HipHop ist den in dieser Studie untersuchten Jugendlichen aus Sao Paulo und Berlin gemeinsam. Als Schwarze bzw. als Jugendliche türkischer Herkunft sind sie in der Gesellschaft gleichermaßen auch der Ausgrenzung und Diskriminierung ausgesetzt. Gegenstand der empirisch-qualitativen Untersuchung ist die ästhetisch-musikalische Praxis der Jugendlichen und ihre stilistische Verortung innerhalb der HipHop-Bewegung. Dem HipHop kommt dabei eine besondere Funktion im praktischen Umgang mit Diskriminierung zu. In den Strategien, die die Jugendlichen zur Bewältigung von Diskriminierung entwickelt haben, zeigen sich indes Unterschiede zwischen Sao Paulo und Berlin. Gerade wo solche Strategien nicht habitualisiert sind, können Diskriminierungserfahrungen den Jugendlichen zum Identitätsproblem werden

Examine the structure and context of identity development in a number of different countries: Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Italy, China, and Japan. While some identity development proceeds in much the same way across national contexts, this issue suggests that there are important nuances in the ways in which identity unfolds in each country. Macrocultural forces, such as permissiveness in Sweden, collective guilt in Germany, and filial piety in China, direct the identity development process in important ways. Expectations regarding obligations and ties to family also direct the identity development process differently in many of the countries included in this volume—such as extended co-residence with parents in Italy, lifelong obligations to follow parents' wishes in China, and democratic independence in Sweden. The various countries are compared and contrasted against the United States, where much of the early identity research was conducted. The volume also reviews specific identity challenges facing immigrant and ethnic-minority individuals in countries that receive large numbers of immigrants—Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy—and suggests many future directions for identity research in various parts of the world. The dramatic expansion of the media and communications sector since the 1990s has brought South Asia on the global scene as a major center for media production and consumption. This book is the first overview of media expansion and its political ramifications in South Asia during these years of economic reforms. From the puzzling liberalization of media under military dictatorship in Pakistan to the brutal killings of journalists in Sri Lanka, and the growing influence of social media in riots and political protests in India, Nepal and Bangladesh, the chapters analyse some of the most important developments in the media fields of contemporary South Asia. Attentive to colonial histories as well as connections within and beyond South Asia in the age of globalization, the chapters combine theoretically grounded studies with original empirical research to unravel the dynamics of media as politics. The chapters are organized around the three frames of participation, control and friction. They bring to the fore the double edged nature of publicity and containment inherent in media, thereby advancing postcolonial perspectives on the massive media transformation underway in South Asia and the global South more broadly.
