Op 25 september 1882 opende het modehuis Hirsch & Cie de deuren aan het Leidseplein in Amsterdam. Oprichters Sally Berg en Sylvain Kahn voorzagen hiermee in een grote behoeft. Voor het eerst konden vrouwen uit de elite in eigen land haute couture aanschaffen. In het imposante Hirschgebouw dat in 1912 tegenover de stadsschouwburg verrees, konden zij kennismaken met spectaculaire modeshows. Hirsch was meer dan een modepaleis. Het grootwinkelwarenhuis was een knooppunt van tegenstellingen in de massasamenleving – tussen modern en traditioneel, de familie en het bedrijf, productie en consumptie, de naaisters en de dames, mannen en vrouwen –, die in dit boek kritisch worden onderzocht. Het belicht Hirsch & Cie als een joods familiebedrijf met een rijk geschakeerd personeelsbestand en een gedistingeerde klantenkring die elkaar ontmoetten in een fraai vormgegeven gebouw. Vernieuwend is de aandacht voor wat in Hirsch werd verkocht: exclusieve kleding die vrouwen tot op zekere hoogte kon maken tot wie zij wilden zijn.

Hoe zag het dagelijks leven er uit van vrouwen die in het Nederland van rond 1900 een zelfstandig beroep wilden uitoefenen? De brieven die de Amsterdamse schilderes Betsy Repelius (1848-1921) schreef aan haar hartsvriendin, de arts Marie du Saar (1860-1952), geven een veelzijdig en persoonlijk antwoord op die vraag. De brieven tonen hoe Betsy Repelius het professionele kunstenaarsbestaan beleefde, haar buitenlandse reizen, het gezelschaps- en uitgaansleven en haar uitgebreide sociale contacten. Een zweem van tragiek klinkt in de brieven door omdat het aanvankelijke plan van de twee vrouwen om samen te wonen en hun beroep uit te oefenen in de riante woning op de Amsterdamse Vondelstraat spaak liep: Marie du Saar trouwde met een musicus, kreeg kinderen, trok de wereld in en Betsy Repelius moest zich schikken in haar lot. Dat deed ze dapper en welgemoed en uit haar brieven rijst een rijkgeschakeerd tijdsbeeld op van het milieu, het sociale netwerk, de conventies en de culturele smaak van de Amsterdamse burgerij rond 1900. De brieven zijn spontaan en direct geschreven; als document van de eerste generatie professionele vrouwen in Nederland zijn ze enig in hun soort en een inspiratiebron voor nieuw onderzoek.

"Reinsurance has to be international in accordance with its nature." This is the well-known viewpoint of Carl von Thieme, one of the founders of Munich Re, who also served as its general director for many years. Thus, it was not a coincidence that the company rose to become the world market leader rather quickly after its founding in 1880. In the following period, Munich Re stayed on top or was occasionally second to Swiss Re. Nonetheless, the broader public does not know much about the company. Johannes Bähr and Christopher Kopper now present the first history of the reinsurer from its beginnings into the 1980s. Few companies have risen to become world market leaders as quickly as Munich Re, and only the fewest have succeeded in remaining at the top of the world market for as long. The company’s history reveals how insurers reacted to major catastrophes and technological shifts. Without sharing risks with reinsurers, countless direct insurers would not have survived the economic consequences of major natural catastrophes and would have been forced into bankruptcy by the weight of their payment obligations. Consequently, reinsurers even made coverage for some risks possible in the first place. Yet Munich Re itself also repeatedly contributed to the introduction of new segments of insurance, such as in the case of machine insurance or high-risk life insurance. Thus, the history of this pioneer of globalization is, at the same time, a history of dealing with risks and managing the distribution of risk. Last but not least, it is also the history of a German company that profited from the National Socialist dictatorship and, with great effort, had to find its way back into the world market after the two world wars.
