Charlene Groome begins a spirited new series with this riveting introduction to the Warriors, a hockey team whose star player has game both on and off the ice—until their new skating coach changes everything. . . Ty Caldwell is one of the Warriors' most valuable players—and one of Vancouver's most eligible bachelors. His moves are part of his charm, so he's surprised by how strongly he's drawn to the team's new skating coach—and even more surprised when she cross-checks his advances. But Ty loves a challenge, and the same persistence he flaunts in the rink may help him off the ice. . . Eileen Francis is a world-class skater with a gold medal to prove it. But professional hockey is still a man's world—so when she lands the job as the interim coach for The Warriors, her curves are way bigger news than her turns. Seven Games A Human History written by Oliver Roeder and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-25 with History categories.

A group biography of seven enduring and beloved games, and the story of why—and how—we play them. Checkers, backgammon, chess, and Go. Poker, Scrabble, and bridge. These seven games, ancient and modern, fascinate millions of people worldwide. In Seven Games, Oliver Roeder charts their origins and historical importance, the delightful arcana of their rules, and the ways their design makes them pleasurable. Roeder introduces thrilling competitors, such as evangelical minister Marion Tinsley, who across forty years lost only three games of checkers; Shusai, the Master, the last Go champion of imperial Japan, defending tradition against “modern rationalism”; and an IBM engineer who created a backgammon program so capable at self-learning that NASA used it on the space shuttle. He delves into the history and lore of each game: backgammon boards in ancient Egypt, the Indian origins of chess, how certain shells from a particular beach in Japan make the finest white Go stones. Beyond the cultural and personal stories, Roeder explores why games, seemingly trivial pastimes, speak so deeply to the human soul. He introduces an early philosopher of games, the aptly named Bernard Suits, and visits an Oxford cosmologist who has perfected a computer that can effectively play bridge, a game as complicated as human language itself. Throughout, Roeder tells the compelling story of how humans, pursuing scientific glory and competitive advantage, have invented AI programs better than any human player, and what that means for the games—and for us. Funny, fascinating, and profound, Seven Games is a story of obsession, psychology, history, and how play makes us human.

Jambo! Experience deepest, darkest Africa! It's the beautiful but dangerous setting for this shocking saga of one Sudanese family's staggering adversity that mirrors present-day Africa. Decimated and put into iron-clad slavery, the family is split apart and sold to the highest bidders in West Africa. Rune Erikson becomes infatuated with a beautiful South African UN worker. The seductress pulls him into a vortex of slavery and blood diamonds. Hatari, the fifth novel in a series, features the somewhat-jaded-but-dashing Rune Erikson, who desperately searches through diamond fields from Canada's frozen Arctic to steaming equatorial Africa. Rune rides camels through the shifting sands of Timbuktu, then treks through the muddy diamond pits of Congo, the beautiful port of Cape Town, the wild bushveldt of Johannesburg, the zealotry of Zimbabwe, the intrigue of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Mombasa, the nonsentient streets of Nairobi, and is initiated into the ways of the colourful warriors of the Masai Mara. Braving marauding lions, snorting hippos, stomping elephants, and soul-sapping jungle humidity, Rune fights African warlords and diamond smugglers in his quest for justice. Coloured by romance and spiced with eroticism, this adventure lures Rune off his sailing ketch, Valhalla, in Victoria's Fisherman's Wharf into the soft arms of a sizzling South African Dutch enchantress, becoming embedded in the myths and legends of tribal Africa. How family video game play promotes intergenerational communication, connection, and learning. Video games have a bad reputation in the mainstream media. They are blamed for encouraging social isolation, promoting violence, and creating tensions between parents and children. In this book, Sinem Siyahhan and Elisabeth Gee offer another view. They show that video games can be a tool for connection, not isolation, creating opportunities for families to communicate and learn together. Like smartphones, Skype, and social media, games help families stay connected. Siyahhan and Gee offer examples: One family treats video game playing as a regular and valued activity, and bonds over Halo. A father tries to pass on his enthusiasm for Star Wars by playing Lego Star Wars with his young son. Families express their feelings and share their experiences and understanding of the world through playing video games like The Sims, Civilization, and Minecraft. Some video games are designed specifically to support family conversations around such real-world issues and sensitive topics as bullying and peer pressure. Siyahhan and Gee draw on a decade of research to look at how learning and teaching take place when families play video games together. With video games, they argue, the parents are not necessarily the teachers and experts; all family members can be both teachers and learners. They suggest video games can help families form, develop, and sustain their learning culture as well as develop skills that are valued in the twenty-first century workplace. Educators and game designers should take note.

The Rev’d Natalie Cross, a high-profile priest at St Paul’s Cathedral, is tipped to be one of the first female bishops in the Church of England. She could be happy. But she’s not. Natalie’s work among the desperately poor is intricately bound up with her wounded past. Her fierce humanity has already got her into trouble as a foreign aid worker among the refugees of Sudan and the Middle East. And when she is drawn into the world of peace-process politics, it seems it’s not her faith she needs so much as a brutal self-reliance born of damage done long ago. In a godforsaken world of oppression and terror, where cynical intelligence agencies operate outside the rule of international law, she is forced to respond in kind to those who would so cruelly use and abuse her. The most dangerous people are not always those holding the guns – and Natalie will need to abandon morality and tap into her own dark side to take them on.
