The attempts of fixing our nations school system since 1964 have not been a walk in the park. Several legislations and laws have been reformed to improve ways to implement the improvement plans in our school system. Looking back at the anatomy of our education system in the last fifty years brings up very few solutions as to what direction is righteously affordable for the next generation. Whether you talk about equality of education or legislation for the common standards for K12, what really matters is how well our next generation of youth is ready for the twenty-first-century workforce and/or college pathways. This book was written on behalf of students, teachers, and parents, who lack the understanding, guidance, stability, and hope in the twenty-first-century educational system. This is a system of turmoil. We have seen changes over the last fifty years, yet millions of students from elementary to freshmen year in college are suffering academically. Many are failing, and few are making the grade. Our nation ranks below the top 20 worldwide in math and science, and we are not moving fast enough to change it. It is very important to note that students of all ages can benefit from this book to improve their education and get the much-needed support academically through counseling and mentoring. Parents and students need advisement. Students need to know what tools are available to succeed in their academic affairs, and parents need to know if those tools are adequate. Education is the key for success, and perseverance unlocks the door. This book opens the door to a rewarding career and best decision making for a prosperous future and allows students to grasp a better understanding of what it means to be educated. This book gives the essence of where we were and where we are headed. Many students dont know how to study and lack the understanding of why reading is important. Millions of students come to school with raw minds and starving brains. This book looks at the mind of a teenager and the brain. In this book, youll learn about proper nutrition that will enhance the mind and spark the thinking cells. As you read this guide, you will learn more and more answers to readiness for the twenty-first-century workplace and the needed skills to succeed. It’s the late 1980s—hair is big, Lycra is rampant, and supermodels rule the earth. Every girl in America dreams of becoming the next Cindy, Claudia, or Naomi, and seventeen-year-old Emily Woods is no different. She looks different, though—striking enough to start a career. Despite the protestations of her hippie parents, she plunges into the glamorous but grueling world of professional modeling. But Emily is more than just a small-town beauty with stars in her eyes: She’s been accepted to Columbia University, and she’s not about to let couture and klieg lights get in the way of an Ivy League education. Thus begins Emily’s double life: cramming for a final at an exotic swimsuit shoot in the Caribbean; fighting the freshman fifteen to avoid the wrath of her agent; owning a closet full of Versace but nothing to wear to a frat party; sitting in a women’s studies class while ads featuring girls she knows are picked apart; juggling the attention of both college guys and the sought-after fashion photographer of the moment. But as Emily pursues her chic fantasy of Vogue covers and prestigious cosmetic campaigns, her priorities start to shift. In the ultra-competitive quest for supermodel fame and fortune, strutting off the runway to study Shakespeare might mean letting another pretty face snag her stilettos, and Emily’s thisclose to getting a leg up on her dreams. Before long, the seamier side of the fashion industry—cocaine and cads, collagen and implants, fad diets and eating disorders—becomes close up and personal. All of a sudden, Emily realizes how far she’s strayed from her dream of having it all. With sliding grades that threaten her future at Columbia and spotty bookings that put her career as a model in question, Emily is finally forced to make a choice between style and substance. Dazzling, dramatic, and as real as it gets, Model Student shines a spotlight behind the scenes and reminds us why you can’t judge a book by its cover girl.

Based on his dissertation research, The Retention of First-Year Black Male Students at Predominately White Private and Public Universities and Colleges provides evidence that the retention of first-year Black male students at predominately White private or public universities and colleges can be achieved. Using the experiences of six participants at a predominately White private university in the Washington, D.C. area, the book encourages Black male high school graduates who want to attend predominately White private or public universities or colleges to use those participants’ experiences—specifically the key factors that contributed to their academic success—in obtaining their college degrees. Educated Black men tend to improve their communities, provide financially for their families, enjoy higher self-esteem, and become valuable assets to their employers, perhaps even becoming business owners. Today, African-American enrollment in higher education is at an all-time high, but there is still a 20-point gap in graduation as compared to Whites at 63%. This gap has enormous economic and societal implications. “Without education, there is no hope for our people, and without hope, our future is lost.” —Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 2009 This treatise not only offers inspiration and practical advice for Black men seeking higher education; it provides valuable suggestions for high school counselors, college administrators, and faculty who support this worthy goal.
