American History Of The 20th Century written by Richard Rubin and has been published by ibooks this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-23 with History categories.

This book deals with American history since 1880—a period when the United States was transformed from a relatively small, remote, and isolated outpost to the planet’s richest, most powerful, and most influential nation. It is also, not coincidentally, a period that produced some of the world’s most unforgettable characters—and some of its best stories. History is not fixed, not two-dimensional, not black-and-white; it is always open to interpretation, always subject to speculation, always riddled with mystery. Only one thing is certain about history: All of it was essential to creating the world we live in today. In that regard, every story you will read in this book, and any other history book, is your story, too. What happens to you today has a great deal to do with what happened to other people a century ago; what you do tomorrow is influenced, whether you know it or not, by what other people did yesterday. In learning about history, we invariably learn a lot about ourselves, too.

This volume is a collection of essays on black short stories written between 1998 and 1976. It aims to say something about the black short story as a genre and the development of the racial situation in America as well. The primary aim is to introduce the reader to this long neglected genre of black fiction. In contrast to the black novel, the short story has hardly been given extensive criticism, let alone serious attention. The individual essays of this collection aim at presenting new points of critical orientation in the hope of reviving and fostering further discussions. They provide a variety of approaches, and a great diversity of critical points of view.

The Whole Story written by Irving Abrahamson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Soviet Union categories.

The Whole Story is the account of the author's wild goose chase to the USSR in 1970, behind the Iron Curtain, in search of his aunt, a woman he had met only in letters she had written to his father, her brother. He knew she had gone through revolution, expulsion, and two World Wars, suffering bitterly under the Lithuanians and Germans during World War Two and under the Russian Communists afterward. But he did not know where she might be living or if, in fact, she was still alive. The book tells why he went to find her, how he found her, and how he managed to get her and her surviving family out of the prison that was the Soviet Union. It is the account of his personal, unlikely encounter with History through the discoveries he made pursuing her own encounter with History. It is a story full of stories: his, hers, theirs--and the context in which they occurred. To provide these stories and The Whole Story with their background, their proper context and necessary perspective, the author defines the Holocaust, explores the implications of the definition, and considers the place the Holocaust has held on the agenda of the Catholic Church, the Vatican, and especially Pope John Paul II. In this light the author calls into question Pope John Paul's reputation for having advanced Catholic-Jewish relations with respect to dialogue and reconciliation and faults those Jews and Christians who uncritically accept this reputation at face value. The Whole Story illuminates the recent history of Catholic-Jewish relations for those Christians and Jews who do not know it and for those who for a long time to come will want to know it and have to know it. In many respects The Whole Story is more timely and relevant now than when it was written. *Compiler and editor of Against Silence: The Voice and Vision of Elie Wiesel. 3 vols.N.Y.: Holocaust Library, 1985.
