Em maio de 2020, a Fundação Oswaldo Cruz completou 120 anos de existência em meio à maior emergência sanitária do último século. Mais um entre os tantos desafios atravessados pela instituição que, diante da pandemia causada pelo novo coronavírus, reforça a sua importância para a ciência, a inovação e as pesquisas em saúde pública no Brasil. Mesmo em um ano de inúmeras dificuldades e incertezas trazidas pela Covid-19, o aniversário da Fiocruz não passou em branco e, além de homenagens e ações de celebração, uma publicação especial sobre a sua história chega ao público em versão atualizada: a reimpressão comemorativa de Manguinhos do Sonho à Vida: a ciência na Belle Époque. O livro foi coordenado e redigido pelo historiador Jaime Benchimol, pesquisador da Casa de Oswaldo Cruz (COC/Fiocruz). A primeira da obra foi lançada em 1990, pelo Departamento de Pesquisa da COC/Fiocruz, como parte das comemorações do aniversário de 90 anos da instituição. Além dos textos originais, novos prefácio e apresentação foram agregados à reimpressão, contextualizando a pertinência da republicação do título. A nova versão mantém os pilares do volume de 30 anos atrás, retratando as origens e a trajetória do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz nas primeiras décadas do século 20. Dividido em três partes, o livro aborda, na primeira delas, a história político-administrativa e o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, da produção e do ensino em Manguinhos. Em seguida, trata do complexo arquitetônico, remetendo-o ao contexto do ecletismo e das transformações urbanas. No último ensaio, recupera a figura e a obra do arquiteto de Manguinhos, o português Luiz de Morais Júnior, enfatizando especialmente seus projetos de caráter médico-sanitário. Benchimol faz questão de ressaltar não apenas o encantamento causado pelo extraordinário conjunto arquitetônico de Manguinhos - simbolizado especialmente pelo Castelo Mourisco -, mas também a importância da instituição para a ciência brasileira. "Esse é o aspecto mais fascinante da Fiocruz: desde o início ela teve um lado voltado para a pesquisa biomédica, uma outra vertente voltada para o ensino da microbiologia e das disciplinas daquilo que se instituía na época com o nome de medicina tropical. E havia também uma terceira vertente, que era a fabricação de produtos biológicos, a fabricação de soros e de vacinas para o tratamento e a prevenção de várias doenças. Esse é basicamente o tripé em que se apoia a Fiocruz até hoje", explica. Apesar de ser um lançamento comemorativo, Nísia Trindade Lima reforça a dificuldade de se falar em celebração em meio ao preocupante cenário de pandemia. Ela afirma, porém, que o sonho/projeto de Manguinhos continua a inspirar gerações de novos cientistas e pesquisadores. "Não é demasiado lembrar que a gênese da instituição esteve diretamente relacionada à crise sanitária do início do século XX, sobretudo ao surto de peste bubônica, mas a primeira geração de pesquisadores, sob a liderança de Oswaldo Cruz, ousou ir além da missão inicial do então Instituto Soroterápico Federal, e criar um efetivo centro de pesquisa. Também por essa razão, nos 120 anos da Fiocruz, voltar às origens nos permite entender a importância e os grandes desafios para as instituições de ciência em um país como o Brasil", analisa a presidente da Fiocruz.
