This book fills the Iberian linguistic and geographical gap in Arthurian studies, replacing the now-outdated work by William J. Entwistle (1925). It covers Arthurian material in all the major Peninsular Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician); it follows the spread of Arthurian material overseas with the seaborne expansion of Spain and Portugal from Iberia into America and Asia in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; and, as well as examining the specifically Arthurian texts themselves, it traces the continued influence of the medieval Arthurian material and its impact on the society, literature and culture of the Golden Age and beyond, including its presence in Don Quixote, the influential Spanish Arthurian-inspired romance Amadís de Gaula, and in Spanish ballads. Such was its influence that we find an indigenous American woman called ‘Iseo’ (Iseult); and an Arthurian story appeared in an indigenous language of the Philippines, Tagalog, as late as the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

How did the colonization of Goa in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries take place? How was it related to projects for the conversion of Goan colonial subjects to Catholicism? In Religion and Empire in Portuguese India, Ângela Barreto Xavier examines these questions through a reading of the relevant secular and missionary archives and texts. She shows how the twin drives of conversion and colonization in Portuguese India resulted in a variety of outcomes, ranging from negotiation to passive resistance to moments of extreme violence. Focusing on the rural hinterlands rather than the city of Goa itself, Barreto Xavier shows how Goan actors were able to seize hold of complex cultural resources in order to further their own projects and narrate their own myths and histories. In the process, she argues, Portuguese Goa emerged as a space with a specific identity that was a result of these contestations and interactions. The book de-essentializes the categories of colonizer and colonized, making visible instead their inner-group diversity of interests, their different modes of identification, and the specificity of local dynamics in their interactions and exchanges—in other words, the several threads that wove the fabric of colonial life.

Virgílio legou à literatura portuguesa uma formulação angustiante por meio da qual o rosto mais visível da epopeia nacional, Luís de Camões, e muitos dos escritores que se lhe seguiram, expressaram, em simultâneo, dois modos de ver e de entender Portugal e a sua história. Incluindo uma deambulação pelo poema narrativo Camões, de Almeida Garrett, pela poesia de Cesário Verde e pela «epopeia mínima» que é a Mensagem de Fernando Pessoa, a fim de verificar a paradoxal convivência entre epopeia e antiepopeia (expressão do claro-escuro que simbolicamente resume a gesta marítima portuguesa), este estudo centra-se na obra poética de Manuel Alegre, autor assumidamente antiépico. Na sua poesia, o tom confiante que gera a poesia épica desaparece, aparentemente, para dar lugar à crítica desalentada e ao lamento pelo devir histórico; a idealidade do mundo de aventura e fascínio da epopeia – liminarmente recusada pelo poeta – volve-se, ora no horror interminável da guerra colonial, reedição de Alcácer Quibir, ora na epopeia triste nas terras de exílio e de emigração, ora ainda na domesticidade «insuportável» do quotidiano lusíada. E «o resto é um morrer de pequenez». Não surpreende, pois, que este poeta, deslocando-se para o pólo oposto ao da poesia épica, numa estratégia de claro distanciamento, cante «perdas lágrimas danos»; que a tuba sonorosa reverta – «Com que pena» –, em «lira já cansada e enrouquecida», em sinal de um país que «Não Há». Convivendo com o Portugal sombrio e disfórico, sem império nem imperialismos, cabisbaixo e imóvel, de candeias às avessas com a ideia de descoberta e consigo mesmo, a poesia alegriana esconde, porém, na sua faceta retórico-estilística, de feição marcadamente epopeica, nos seus símbolos e mitos (onde D. Sebastião é, sem dúvida, o eterno herói), na sua semântica luminosa, nos decassílabos, que sustentam o tom, por vezes, grandioso, na sua lucidez combativa, nas figuras compensadoras do sonho e da imaginação, um outro Portugal: o Portugal da descoberta e da Conquista, associado à figura mítica de Camões, presença tutelar que se respira nos seus versos. Situado embora no extremo oposto da poesia épica, Manuel Alegre é, afinal, outro rosto menos visível da epopeia lusíada, ou antes, da mais recente epopeia lusíada, próxima da vida, da morte – do humano.
