An examination of revolutions in the Iberian and Italian peninsulas, Sicily and Greece in the 1820s that reveals a popular constitutional culture in the South After the turbulent years of the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna’s attempt to guarantee peace and stability across Europe, a new revolutionary movement emerged in the southern peripheries of the continent. In this groundbreaking study, Maurizio Isabella examines the historical moment in the 1820s when a series of simultaneous uprisings took the quest for constitutional government to Portugal, Spain, the Italian peninsula, Sicily and Greece. Isabella places these events in a broader global revolutionary context and, decentering conventional narratives of the origins of political modernity, reveals the existence of an original popular constitutional culture in southern Europe. Isabella looks at the role played by secret societies, elections, petitions, protests and the experience of war as well as the circulation of information and individuals across seas and borders in politicising new sectors of society. By studying the mobilisation of the army, the clergy, artisans, rural communities and urban populations in favour of or against the revolutions, he shows that the uprisings in the South—although their ultimate fate was determined by the intervention of more powerful foreign countries—enjoyed considerable popular support in ideologically divided societies and led to the introduction of constitutions. Isabella argues that these movements informed the political life of Portugal and Spain for many decades and helped to forge a long-lasting revolutionary tradition in the Italian peninsula. The liberalism that emerged as a popular political force across southern Europe, he contends, was distinct from French and British varieties.

Cet ouvrage propose une approche des relations du mythe avec le constitutionnalisme. L'auteur présente l'histoire du constitutionnalisme moderne dans une perspective philosophique, il analyse des relations d'influence et il cherche les moments d'originalité dans ce processus. Le livre sur la polémique – presque ignorée - concernant le Nouveau Code, la première tentative de faire une constitution au Portugal. Là se trouve deux courants constitutionnalistes : l'autoritaire, celui du despotisme éclairé, et le modèle à la Montesquieu. Tous les deux sont mythiques. Dans le constitutionnalisme, l'influence des mythes français a été décisive, mais elle a été toujours nuancée (ou camouflée) par des mythes nationaux. A tel point qu'on a parfois du mal à reconnaître les traits du modèle dans les excès ou dans les souplesses des formules concrètes.

A vida de Dom Pedro I ganha uma nova abordagem em livro sobre a trajetória musical do Imperador, autor do Hino da Independência. Músico talentoso, praticante de diversos instrumentos musicais, compositor, raras são as referências às atividades musicais de D. Pedro I. Esta publicação é fruto de quatro anos de pesquisas sobre o músico D. Pedro I em bibliotecas do Brasil, Portugal, França e Áustria. A autora, a musicista Rosana Lanzelotte, também partiu do resgate das obras musicais do Imperador para elucidar outros aspectos pouco explorados de sua biografia, como o viés constitucionalista. Em um tempo em que o absolutismo predominava e vivendo em uma família igualmente absolutista, D. Pedro foi divergente: convocou a primeira Assembleia, responsável pelas bases da que veio a ser a Constituição outorgada pelo Imperador, em 1824, e que se tornou a mais longeva Constituição do Brasil, vigente durante 65 anos. A música aproximou D. Pedro de D. Leopoldina, grande pianista, mas também dos afro descendentes, com quem costumava tocar. Abolicionista, o Imperador dirigia com frequência a orquestra de escravizados da Fazenda de Santa Cruz, a quem tratava com deferência. O livro é abundantemente ilustrado e exibe raras partituras de D. Pedro e de seus contemporâneos. A produção musical do Imperador não é extensa, mas significativa e, pela motivação das obras, mostra que ele empregou o talento na valorização da nova nação brasileira. No Anexo I são listadas todas as obras conhecidas de D. Pedro I. Estas e as de outros compositores de sua época vinculam-se aos acontecimentos históricos em dimensão artística, conforme evidenciado pela cronologia no Anexo II.
