Brazil is a rapidly emerging country. Brazilian theology, namely the Theology of Liberation, has become well known in the 1970s and 1980s. The politically active Base Ecclesial Communities and the progressive posture of the Roman Catholic Church contrasted with a steadily growing number of evangelicals, mostly aligned with the military regime but attractive precisely to the poor. After democratic transition in the mid-1980s, the context changed considerably. Democracy, growing religious pluralism and mobility, a vibrant civil society, the political ascension of the Worker's Party and growing wealth, albeit within a continuously wide social gap, are some of the elements that show the need of a new approach to theology. It must be a theology that is both critical and constructive, resisting and cooperative, a theology that is able to give orientation to the churches, valuing and encouraging their contribution in society while avoiding attempts of imposition. The Churches and Democracy in Brazil, the fruit of years of interdisciplinary study of the Brazilian context and its main churches and theology, makes its case for an ecumenically articulated public theology. It seeks inspiration mainly in Luther and Lutheran theology, emphasizing human dignity, freedom, trust, the disposition to serve, and the ability to endure the ambiguities of reality, as well as a fresh interpretation of the doctrine of the two regiments. These are the fundamental elements of what makes human beings full members of the body politic: citizenship, their right to have rights and to be able to effectively live them, together with their corresponding duties, in a move of growing political participation conscious of their religious motivation in view of the commonweal.

Este livro tem por objetivo analisar os sepultamentos e cemitérios da vila de São João Batista de Nova Friburgo a partir de 1818 e no decorrer do século XIX. Em 1819 ocorreu a primeira leva de imigrantes suíços de maioria católica, liderada por um padre e marcada pela presença minoritária de evangélicos/reformados,cuja maioria foi convertida ao catolicismo após pressões das autoridades eclesiásticas locais, mantendo as estruturas da vila como católicas, inclusive o cemitério. Alguns que não se submeteram conseguiram construir seu próprio espaço de sepultamento, em geral, no terreno onde haviam vivido. Com a chegada da segunda leva de imigrantes - agora germânicos de maioria evangélico-luterana liderada por um pastor reformado –, em 1824, houve tensões e conflitos entre os dois líderes espirituais, em especial, quando o pastor realizou rituais fúnebres que se desdobraram na criação do primeiro cemitério evangélico na área urbana da vila. A pesquisa teve como suporte uma variada documentação,composta por: diários de imigrantes, correspondências e ofícios entre as autoridades locais e imperiais, vasta bibliografia. Além destas, foram utilizados livros de óbito, casamento e batismo para obter informações sobre as práticas fúnebres católicas e evangélicas. A partir da investigação, foi possível constatar que a concorrência de diferentes confissões religiosas cristãs numa mesma região produziu considerável liberdade para obter opções de sepultamentos, cemitérios e diferentes vivências da morte mediadas por rituais fúnebres antagônicos.

Die Religiosität der Pommern und deren Nachkommen ist gekennzeichnet durch eine Mischung aus religiösen Praktiken magischen Inhaltes und evangelisch-lutherischem Glauben. Als Hunderte von ihnen ab dem 19. Jahrhundert nach Brasilien auswanderten, brachten sie ihre Religiosität mit sich und haben sie auch in den Siedlungsgebieten weiter tradiert. So gelang es ihnen mithilfe unterschiedlicher kirchlicher und magischer Quellen ihre Verluste, Krisen, Krankheiten, Nöte und Schwierigkeiten zu meistern und ein einzigartiges Umfeld für sich und ihre Nachkommen in den brasilianischen Siedlungsgebieten zu schaffen. In diesem Buch werden zunächst die Motive der Auswanderung kritisch untersucht, außerdem die politischen und ökonomischen Interessen sowohl Preußens als auch Brasiliens an der Immigrationsbewegung. Anhand von primären Quellen, die von pommerschen Einwanderern und ihren Nachkommen mitgebracht wurden und rege Verwendung fanden, sowie durch eine Reihe von Sekundärliteratur, welche die Immigrationsgeschichte aus verschiedenen Perspektiven darstellt, werden der Prozess der Ansiedlung und Beheimatung, die Bewältigung von Schwierigkeiten sowie die sozialen, kulturellen und konfessionellen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Einwanderern und Einheimischen, aber auch innerhalb derselben ethnischen Gruppe, thematisiert. Ein reichhaltiges Buch, das die Geschichte einer ethnischen Gruppe abbildet, die bereits in ihrer alten Heimat wirtschaftliche, soziale und religiöse Konflikte zu meistern hatte, und auch in Brasilien, zusammen mit anderen deutschsprachigen Einwanderern, neue Bewältigungsstrategien entwickeln musste.
