Quinze historiens africains, actuellement en poste dans onze universités d'Afrique francophone, se sont réunis pour confronter leur regard sur les grandes mutations contemporaines des sociétés africaines. Un historien africain leur répond d'Amérique. Deux constats majeurs s'imposent : d'une part la permanence des interrogations sur continuité-héritage-rupture par rapport à la colonisation, de l'autre l'ancrage des préoccupations historiques dans le temps présent, celui de la démocratisation laborieuse et des difficultés économiques. Trois thèmes s'entrecroisent : l'héritage des structures et les nécessaires innovations, les groupes de pression et la réinterprétation du politique, les diasporas et les réseaux transculturels et transsociaux. Tous les textes sont sous-tendus par la même volonté de mettre à contribution le passé pour comprendre le présent. Ces échanges témoignent du dynamisme des recherches en Afrique, masqué en partie par la difficulté de leur diffusion. Le laboratoire SEDET de l'Université Paris-VII Denis Diderot a voulu aider à y remédier.

L’histoire de la philosophie nous apprend qu’au XIXe siècle l’activité spirituelle était dominante. A cette même époque, se développait l’esprit de nationalité et l’idéologie fondée sur la croyance en une hiérarchie des races humaines. Cette idéologie a été soutenue par plusieurs théoriciens parmi lesquels on a l’habitude de placer le philosophe allemand Hegel. Pour Hegel, l’Africain n’a pas d’histoire, car il n’a ni écriture et possède un esprit prélogique : Pour reprendre Ki-Zerbo dans son livre : « ces peuples n’ont rien donné à l’humanité, …ils n’ont rien produit, ni Euclide, ni Aristote, ni Galilée, ni Lavoisier, ni Pasteur… » (Histoire de l’Afrique noire : d’hier à demain, Hatier, Paris, 1978,p.56-57). Pour contredire cette thèse hégélienne, on a vu naître l’intelligentia africaine. L'auteur propose d'entrer dans ce vieux débat pour faire ressortir les questions actuelles de la philosophie africaine...
