La production de Watteau ne se limite pas à ces seules scènes qui ont fait sa célébrité. Il laisse un oeuvre d'une grande diversité tant iconographique que technique ; Watteau a abordé avec une étonnante facilité tous les genres picturaux - sujets militaires, scènes de genre, portraits, sujets mythologiques - et souvent modifié sa technique. Peintre incomparable, il est aussi un dessinateur hors pair qui a enthousiasmé la critique d'art et les amateurs dès son vivant. Watteau incarne mieux qu'aucun autre l'esprit de son temps, celui d'une période de transition majeure dans l'histoire de France comme dans l'histoire de l'art : la fin du règne de Louis XIV et le début de la Régence, le passage de l'art de Le Brun, mort en 1690, à celui de Boucher, qui débute en reproduisant des dessins de Watteau dans les années 1720. Il annonce avec force les orientations de l'art du XVIIIe siècle en proposant une peinture claire, élégante et raffinée, qui exprime ce bonheur que le siècle des Lumières dit avoir inventé.
