Depuis le classique de René Rémond, les droites n'avaient pas trouvé leur historien. C'est désormais chose faite grâce à la belle synthèse de Gilles Richard. Couvrant plus de deux siècles d'histoire politique et n'hésitant pas à aborder les enjeux contemporains, l'ouvrage évoque bien entendu les partis et leurs métamorphoses, tout en scrutant les cultures politiques et en pointant les grandes mutations. Depuis 1815, en effet, les temps ont bien changé ! Ce qui faisait clivage au XIXe siècle entre droites et gauches (la République démocratique et laïque) a ainsi laissé place au XXe siècle à un autre clivage : la République qui avait triomphé dans les années 1870-1880 devait-elle être "libérale" comme le souhaitait Jules Ferry, ou bien "sociale" comme le proclama Jean Jaurès ? En ce début de XXIe siècle, tout semble à nouveau remis en cause : tandis que les gauches sont menacées de disparition, les droites sont aujourd'hui hégémoniques. Mais le pluriel s'impose plus que jamais. De fait, les oppositions ne manquent pas, entre tenants du libéralisme et droite nationaliste, ou entre "les mondialistes" et "les patriotes", comme Marine Le Pen aime à le répéter. Cette mutation fondamentale surprend ; mais Gilles Richard offre des clés pour comprendre ce qui, à l'heure d'élections présidentielles cruciales, constitue un enjeu déterminant pour la France d'aujourd'hui et de demain.

Membre de l'Académie française, président de la Fondation nationale des sciences politiques, professeur émérite à l'université de Paris-X-Nanterre, René Rémond est historien du XIXe et du XXe siècle.
