Au milieu du XIXe siècle paraissait cet important ouvrage (en deux tomes) consacré aux " races maudites ", en l'occurrence aux fameux " Cagots " qui dans les siècles passés avaient fait écrire beaucoup d'élucubrations... Francisque-Michel va les étudier au moment où ils ne se sont pas encore entièrement fondus dans la population " non- cagote ", c'est ce qui rend son livre primordial. Son étude, d'une grande érudition, est un véritable " état des lieux " de la question. Il aborde en premier les lieux habités et l'histoire particulière de cette race maudite, particulièrement en Gascogne, en Bretagne (les Caqueux), en Poitou (les Colliberts), au pays Basque et en Navarre. Il étudie ensuite la condition, les droits et obligations des Cagots, les lois et règlements qui les régirent et enfin les procès qu'ils soutinrent courageusement pour parvenir à l'égalité des droits. Le tome II étudie les Colliberts du Poitou, les Chuetas de Majorque, les Vaquéros des Asturies, les Marrans d'Auvergne ainsi que divers autres groupes " maudits " moins connus. Enfin un édifiant florilège des chansons composées par et sur les Cagots et un important Appendice achèvent le tome 2. Un livre incontournable, trop systématiquement " pillé " (plus ou moins habilement) depuis 150 ans par tous ceux qui se sont penchés sur cet épineux sujet.
