Par quels canaux cette “contagion” a-t-elle innervé l’ensemble du corps expéditionnaire ? Comment est-on passé, d’une “troupe d’élite” dont les hommes et les officiers avaient été sélectionnés avec un soin tout particulier, à la plus importante mutinerie survenue sur le front occidental ? » En 1915, alors que la guerre s’est enlisée, le gouvernement français prend la chair à canon partout où elle se trouve. L’empire colonial y pourvoit largement, mais c’est encore insuffisant. Paris forme alors le projet de puiser dans les immenses réserves d’hommes de l’allié russe, en échange de quelques livraisons d’armes. C’est un faible apport militaire, mais un magnifique outil de célébration de l’« amitié franco-russe » – jusqu’au moment où la contagion révolutionnaire vient briser les rêves de la propagande. Les deux brigades, arrivées en France en 1916, accueillent la nouvelle de la révolution de février dans le plus grand enthousiasme. La détestation du tsar est unanime parmi les hommes. Après le désastre de l’offensive Nivelle dans laquelle elles sont jetées en avril, les brigades se mutinent et exigent leur rapatriement. Elles sont retirées du front, internées à La Courtine, mais rien n’y fait : l’agitation persiste. Elle sera durement réprimée. Rémi Adam est historien et enseignant. Il a consacré plusieurs livres à l’histoire de la Première Guerre mondiale. Les Révoltés de La Courtine est la première monographie complète sur l’histoire méconnue du corps expéditionnaire russe.

The surprising story of the wine industry’s role in the rise of French Algeria and the fall of empire. “We owe to wine a blessing far more precious than gold: the peopling of Algeria with Frenchmen,” stated agriculturist Pierre Berthault in the early 1930s. In the last decades of the nineteenth century, Europeans had displaced Algerians from the colony’s best agricultural land and planted grapevines. Soon enough, wine was the primary export of a region whose mostly Muslim inhabitants didn’t drink alcohol. Settlers made fortunes while drawing large numbers of Algerians into salaried work for the first time. But the success of Algerian wine resulted in friction with French producers, challenging the traditional view that imperial possessions should complement, not compete with, the metropole. By the middle of the twentieth century, amid the fight for independence, Algerians had come to see the rows of vines as an especially hated symbol of French domination. After the war, Algerians had to decide how far they would go to undo the transformations the colonists had wrought—including the world’s fourth-biggest wine industry. Owen White examines Algeria’s experiment with nationalized wine production in worker-run vineyards, the pressures that resulted in the failure of that experiment, and the eventual uprooting of most of the country’s vines. With a special focus on individual experiences of empire, from the wealthiest Europeans to the poorest laborers in the fields, The Blood of the Colony shows the central role of wine in the economic life of French Algeria and in its settler culture. White makes clear that the industry left a long-term mark on the development of the nation.

This book offers a global history of civilian, military and gendarmerie-style policing around the First World War. Whilst many aspects of the Great War have been revisited in light of the centenary, and in spite of the recent growth of modern policing history, the role and fate of police forces in the conflict has been largely forgotten. Yet the war affected all European and extra-European police forces. Despite their diversity, all were confronted with transnational factors and forms of disorder, and suffered generally from mass-conscription. During the conflict, societies and states were faced with a crisis situation of unprecedented magnitude with mass mechanised killing on the battle field, and starvation, occupation, destruction, and in some cases even revolution, on the home front. Based on a wide geographical and chronological scope – from the late nineteenth century to the interwar years – this collection of essays explores the policing of European belligerent countries, alongside their empires, and neutral countries. The book’s approach crosses traditional boundaries between neutral and belligerent nations, centres and peripheries, and frontline and rear areas. It focuses on the involvement and wartime transformations of these law-enforcement forces, thus highlighting underlying changes in police organisation, identity and practices across this period.
