Pourtant l'histoire de ce moment festif est beaucoup plus longue et complexe. Au carnaval civique destiné à façonner au Moyen Âge la cohésion sociale et politique de la commune, succéda un carnaval voulu par l'aristocratie et associant le peuple aux jeux publics pour mieux dire au monde la puissance et la fascination de cette ville hors du commun. Lorsqu'à la fin du XVIe siècle la primauté commerciale et politique de la Sérénissime en Europe finit par s'essouffler, le carnaval prit le relais des fastes de l'économie marchande et de la diplomatie en accueillant les princes d'Europe et en s'ouvrant à l'opéra. Puis, alors que la ville se repliait sur ses possessions de Terre ferme, le carnaval devint plus monotone, cachant surtout la crise sinon économique, du moins morale, politique et sociale de la République, avant de se réduire au XIXe siècle. Son retour en 1980 a réalisé un subtil mélange : ressusciter une fête urbaine qui renvoie aux fastes baroques du XVIIe siècle tout en l'associant aux souvenirs de Vivaldi, de Pietro Longhi et de Goldoni, contemporains du siècle des Lumières. C'est cette passionnante histoire qui est ici racontée.
