S'il existe de nombreuses histoires de la philosophie antique et de multiples histoires des religions anciennes, peu d'ouvrages par contre ont abordé l'étude de la pensée ancienne dans son ensemble. Et pourtant, c'est le seul moyen de comprendre la production intellectuelle des sociétés du passé, et de percevoir comment les dieux sont apparus dans l'univers mental des peuples. Car la philosophie ne s'est pas constituée de rien et dans le vide : elle s'est formée au sein d'une pensée religieuse, grecque, elle-même en contact permanent avec les religiosités de quelques grandes civilisations antiques, et en particulier celles de l'Egypte et de la Mésopotamie. C'est donc aux origines mêmes qu'il faut se reporter : comment sont apparues les croyances - dès la fin du Paléolithique -, et comment celles-ci aboutiront aux diverses traditions religieuses de l'Antiquité (Égypte et Mésopotamie, mais aussi Judée, Iran, Inde et Chine, ainsi que Grèce et Rome), et enfin comment celles-ci sont-elles la source de la philosophie grecque ? Voilà ce qui est examiné ici. L'auteur a choisi d'étudier ces diverses " mentalités " dans un cadre strictement chronologique, ce qui lui permet de montrer comment l'esprit humain a progressé, depuis la " proto-pensée " de la Préhistoire jusqu'aux grands systèmes philosophiques grecs et leur réception par les penseurs romains. L'exposé chronologique montre clairement les filiations intellectuelles, analyse le développement des conceptions à la base du travail des philosophes, et constitue une très claire initiation-invitation au questionnement philosophique. C'est donc finalement une synthèse de la pensée d'il y a deux mille ans que l'on trouvera ici, présentant les principaux concepts de cette pensée ancienne qui fonde encore la nôtre, et dont on pourra entreprendre la critique. Car il est utile de critiquer la pensée ancienne : la pensée d'aujourd'hui, même après deux millénaires, en est encore entièrement tributaire. Et au moment du " retour du spirituel " et de la perte " postmoderne " de certains repères, il est essentiel de comprendre d'où viennent les idées religieuses, d'évaluer ce que vaut la réflexion philosophique et de se demander s'il est encore possible de penser.
