Histologie is belangrijk als basisvak voor de geneeskunde. Het belang van de rol van de klinisch patholoog en zijn histologische benadering in de diagnose, therapie en prognose van patiënten is de laatste jaren enorm toegenomen. In de ruim dertig jaar dat 'Functionele histologie' verkrijgbaar is, heeft de Nederlandstalige editie van Basic Histology zich een vaste plaats in het (para-)medisch onderwijs veroverd. Deze vijftiende druk van Junqueira's functionele histologie is gelijk aan de veertiende druk. Beide drukken zijn geheel herzien en geactualiseerd op basis van de recente Amerikaanse dertiende druk. Enkele hoofdstukken zijn samengevoegd. In andere hoofdstukken zijn de titels veranderd of is de indeling aangepast, met als doel de logica en de duidelijkheid van de tekst te verbeteren. Ook medische context wordt in overzichtelijke, afzonderlijke tekstblokken besproken. Aan de figuren is nauwgezet aandacht besteed. Uit de Amerikaanse druk zijn veel nieuwe tekeningen overgenomen. Er is daarbij gestreefd naar een zo hoog mogelijk detail en beeldkwaliteit. Bovendien sluiten de figuren in volgorde nu nog beter aan bij de lopende tekst. Om de studeerbaarheid van het boek te verbeteren zijn de duidelijke, didactische samenvattingen uit de Amerikaanse druk vertaald en aangepast aan de Nederlandse editie. Ook is een overzicht van de histologische kleuringen opgenomen. 'Functionele histologie' is bewerkt door Eddie Wisse (bioloog), Celien Vreuls (klinisch patholoog anatoom) en Jan-Luuk Hillebrands (medisch bioloog). De auteurs zijn verbonden aan universiteiten in Nederland en Vlaanderen, elk met hun eigen onderwijssysteem. Hun gemeenschappelijke visie op de inhoud en de betekenis van het histologieonderwijs komt in dit boek tot uitdrukking. 'Functionele histologie' is een actueel en degelijk Nederlandstalig leerboek histologie, bedoeld voor studenten geneeskunde, tandheelkunde, biomedische wetenschappen, biologie, biotechnologie en diergeneeskunde. Maar ook voor degenen die werkzaam zijn in het vakgebied is het een uitstekend naslagwerk. Daarnaast kan het boek gebruikt worden in de opleidingen tot medisch analist, fysiotherapeut en verpleegkundige. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Histology: Arranged Upon an Embryological Basis Philipp Stöhr, whose Lehrbuch der Histologie is here presented with many additions and changes, was born at Würzburg, June 13, 1849, and died in his native city, November 4, 1911. It was his good fortune to study under the most eminent of all histologists, Albert von Kolliker, whose assistant he became in 1877, and whom he succeeded as Professor of Histology and Embryology at Würzburg in 1902. During these years he enriched anatomy with a whole series of important contributions, and he continued his researches until the time of his death, dealing with the relation of lymphocytes to epithelium, the degeneration of glands in the vermiform process, the development of hairs, the nature of the cells of the thymus, and many other subjects. But as stated by Professor Schultze in a memorial address (Verh. phys.-med. Ges., Würzburg, 1912, vol. 42), "Stohr's position as an anatomist doubtless depends upon his surpassing gifts as a teacher." He considered that the instruction of young men in an intricate science was worthy of his best efforts, and his time was freely given to preparing demonstrations, and to writing and revising his Lehrbuch der Histologie und der mikroskopischen Anatomie des Menschen. The first edition of the Lehrbuch appeared in 1887, and the fifteenth, edited by Schultze on the basis of memoranda which Stohr had prepared, was published in 1912. Meanwhile the volume nearly doubled in size. It has been translated into many languages, including the Japanese, and the late editions have been issued in very large numbers. As principal characteristics of the book, there may be mentioned, first, its clear and concise style, somewhat dogmatic because of the omission of essentially all references to authorities. Since Stohr considered that adequate references would be impossible in a book of small size, he omitted them altogether. Second, the almost entire absence of borrowed illustrations. As Schultze remarks, Stohr possessed unusual artistic talent, and many of the excellent figures were drawn by Stohr himself. Third, the full directions for the preparation of every specimen illustrated. In addition to these special characteristics, the book has the advantages of being essentially a resume of Kolliker's exhaustive Gewebelehre, adapted to the use of students.
