Antonio López Gómez (1923-2001), el dedicatario de este libro memorial, aparece en la imagen adjunta delante de su más querida obra hidráulica, el pantano de Tibi, cuya ejecutoria descubrió y propagó en su considereable producción geográfica. El profesor demostró en su trayectoria académica (universidades de Oviedo, de Valencia y Autónoma de Madrid) y en su quehacer investigador, centrado en el Instituto J. S. Elcano (C.S.I.C), un afán integrador de la Geografía, heredado de su maestro, Manuel de Terán. La extensa cultura humanística y la sólida formación científica trascendieron en el magisterio y en la obra investigadora y difusora de A.L.G. Cuando no existían "áreas de conocimiento" en nuestra disciplina, todavía incardinada -en el mejor de los casos- en una licenciatura de Historia, fue pionero en el campo de la climatología. Su contacto con la materna serranía de Atienza y, sobre todo, con la entonces fulgurante realidad de las huertas valencianas le subyugó y de ahí su interés por el mundo agrario. Del estudio del poblamiento pasaría más tarde a la geografía histórica… Sin fisuras, sin hiatos, sin contradicciones, que no se dan en un geógrafo total. Discípulos directos o de segunda o tercera generación, compañeros, amigos y coidealistas, convocados por los departamentos de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, de la Universitat de València y de la Universitat d'Alacant, han aportado enjundiosos trabajos centrados en tres de las líneas fundamentales por las que se afanó el maestro: la geografía histórica, una modalidad cuyo auge subraya la madurez de nuestra ciencia; los estudios del clima, que asumió primero en solitario y luego en equipo; y los paisajes rurales, los cuales marcan especialmente su etapa valenciana de investigación. El conjunto constituye un justo referente del estado actutal de la geografía española y pretende rendir homenaje a Antonio López Gómez, profesor "discreto, sobrio, reservado, honesto y generoso", que formó escuela, más caracterizada por un estilo -de pensamiento, de conducta, de comunicación- que por una doctrina, la cual su liberalismo nunca la permitió imponer.

El clima es, por naturaleza, cambiante. This volume approaches the history of water in the Iberian Peninsula in a novel way, by linking it to the ongoing international debate on water crisis and solutions to overcome the lack of water in the Mediterranean. What water devices were found? What were the models for these devices? How were they distributed in the villas and monastic enclosures? What impact did hydraulic theoretical knowledge have on these water systems, and how could these systems impact on hydraulic technology? Guided by these questions, this book covers the history of water in the most significant cities, the role of water in landscape transformation, the irrigation systems and water devices in gardens and villas, and, lastly, the theoretical and educational background on water management and hydraulics in the Iberian Peninsula between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries. Historiography on water management in the territory that is today Spain has highlighted the region’s role as a mediator between the Islamic masters of water and the Christian world. The history of water in Portugal is less known, and it has been taken for granted that is similar to its neighbour. This book compares two countries that have the same historical roots and, therefore, many similar stories, but at the same time, offers insights into particular aspects of each country. It is recommended for scholars and researchers interested in any field of history of the early modern period and of the nineteenth century, as well as general readers interested in studies on the Iberian Peninsula, since it was the role model for many settlements in South America, Asia and Africa.
