Las dos obras principales que en este volumen editamos (Corrientes literarias… e Historia de la cultura en la América hispánica) responden a un esfuerzo “romántico” por dar a conocer de modo complejo y compacto el universo literario de la historia hispanoamericana hasta mediar el siglo XX. Y lo hacen desde el diálogo entre la literatura y el resto de las creaciones artísticas de modo continuo. No sólo vertebra su “historia” el autor estableciendo continuas líneas de fuga, donde la literatura y las demás artes constituyen las señas de identidad de una época; al mismo tiempo observamos la necesidad de volcar las producciones artísticas como notas distintivas de dicha época, al punto de que la cultura detenta la historia y, casi podríamos asegurar, “es” la historia misma. Para expresar en puridad el alma artística de Hispanoamérica, no tiene más remedio el escritor que trazar coordenadas de análisis mediante las cuales el texto literario se vincula, relaciona y expande en círculos concéntricos junto a las otras expresiones del espíritu y del arte.

Central America was the only part of the far-reaching Spanish Empire in continental America not to experience destructive independence wars in the period between 1810 and 1824. The essays in this volume draw on new historical research to explain why, and to delve into what did happen during the independence period in Central America and Chiapas. The contributors, distinguished scholars from Central America, North America, and Europe, consider themes of power, rebellion, sovereignty, and resistance throughout the Kingdom of Guatemala beginning in the late eighteenth century and ending with independence from Spain and the debate surrounding the decision to join the Mexican Empire. Their work reveals that a “conflict-free” separation from Spain was more complex than is usually understood, and shows how such a separation was crucial to late-nineteenth-century developments. These essays tell us how different groups seized on the political instabilities of Spain to maximize their interests; how Latin American elites prepared elaborate rituals to legitimize power dynamics; why the Spanish military governor Bustamante’s role in Central America should be reconsidered; how Indian and popular uprisings had more to do with tax burdens than with independence rhetoric; how the scholastic thought of Thomas Aquinas played a role in political thinking during the independence period; and why Mexico’s Plan de Iguala, the independence program promoted by Agustín de Iturbide, finally broke Central American elites’ ties to Spain. Focusing on regional and small-town dynamics as well as urban elites, these essays combine to offer an unusually broad and varied perspective on and a new understanding of Central America in the period of independence.

A partir de un aparato teorico polifacetico y propuestas esteticas diversas, Escritura(s) en femenino en las literaturas centroamericanas. Una cuestion de genero? reflexiona sobre las interrelaciones, intersecciones y diferencias entre la escritura femenina, la escritura de mujer(es) y las escrituras en femenino, en la Centroamerica contemporanea y sus diasporas. Asumiendo el caracter performatico tanto de las categorias de sexo y genero (gender) como de la escritura, se estudia la desestabilizacion de nociones binarias y esencialistas y la consiguiente desvinculacion entre, por un lado, la escritura y, por el otro, la (supuesta) identidad sexual y de genero. El estudio de la institucionalización de la crítica testimonial por un lado y del proyecto cultural sandinista por otro permite configurar el papel del testimonio en Nicaragua en los últimos años. Tanto la crítica literaria como la política cultural sandinista delimitaron de forma muy concreta las posibilidades y el sentido que la escritura testimonial podía tener en el contexto revolucionario. ¿Pero cómo se inscribe cada voz particular en ambas tradiciones? Este trabajo trata de establecer las coordinadas precisas en que el discurso testimonial se convirtió en epicentro de la actividad intelectual sobre Centroamérica y la apropiación que la revolución sandinista hizo del mismo. En esos dos espacios se juega la construcción teórica de las posibilidades del relato testimonial y su repercusión como discurso asociado al devenir revolucionario. El hecho de que las voces disidentes con el proyecto sandinista hayan optado también por defender sus propuestas en esa modalidad discursiva sólo se explica a partir de su valor e importancia en el imaginario social de Nicaragua. A medio camino entre la investigación y la reflexión, Gema D. Palazón revela con brío la conversión del testimonio en un espacio privilegiado para la construcción de la memoria histórica en tiempos de globalización, y las implicaciones que ha tenido y sigue conservando en el panorama nicaragüense actual.
