Cuando estalló la Revolución de Mayo, Manuel Belgrano, un hombre habituado a la serenidad del estudio y la meditación que apenas sabía empuñar las armas, aceptó hacerse soldado para defender la causa de la patria nueva y combatir a ejércitos comandados por profesionales aguerridos. Sufrió derrotas en las selvas del Paraguay y, a pesar de la enfermedad que roía sus entrañas, volvió a ponerse al frente de las fuerzas criollas con el propósito de combatir el avance realista desde el Alto Perú. Decidido a dar un símbolo que inspirara a sus soldados en la lucha, creó la bandera celeste y blanca que distingue a los argentinos. Encabezó después el éxodo de los valientes jujeños, que sólo dejó tierra yerma al adversario que avanzaba, y lo venció en Tucumán y Salta. Otra vez probó el sabor del infortunio en Vilcapugio y Ayohuma. Más tarde cruzó el océano con el fin de explicar a las cortes europeas el ideario de quienes, como él, deseaban la independencia. Y al regresar comandó de nuevo el Ejército del Norte. Pero no sólo se desempeñó como soldado, también sirvió en otros puestos y lugares donde la nación en ciernes lo requería: delineó pueblos, fundó escuelas, bregó por el enaltecimiento social de la mujer, rechazó premios materiales y murió en la más completa pobreza. Miguel Ángel De Marco, reconocido historiador y biógrafo, traza una brillante síntesis de aquella existencia fugaz signada por el desinterés, el patriotismo y el sentido del deber.
