Gibraltar ha sido fortaleza militar, colonia, puerto de comercio y contrabando, lugar de asilo político y conspiraciones, centro de operaciones de la Royal Navy, bastión contra la política exterior franquista o más recientemente de resistencia frente al Brexit. Su historia, o mejor dicho sus historias, han abonado un sugestivo campo de mitos e imágenes que, en el siglo XX, fueron socialmente muy movilizadores a ambos lados de la verja levantada por los británicos en 1909. Algunos de sus mitos, con más o menos apasionamiento, todavía siguen siendo invocados. De hecho, encarnan el legado de procesos de reconstitución histórica de un Gibraltar inglés, un Gibraltar gibraltareño y un Gibraltar español. Pero ninguno de estos tres Gibraltares monolíticos refleja la riqueza de su historia ni recoge la complejidad de las relaciones que, no exentas de conflicto, han forjado las experiencias compartidas a la sombra de la famosa roca. Precisamente, el principal propósito de este libro es contribuir a divulgar en español nuevas y diferentes formas de comprender la historia del Peñón desde el siglo XVIII hasta hoy.
