Este libro pretende aportar el esclarecer hitos, personajes relevantes, instituciones y contextos en los cuales se desarrolló la psicología entre los años 1889-1981. La historia comienza rescatando las primeras contribuciones hechas por los alemanes Schneider y Mann, como los aportes de Rómulo Peña, quien sería el primer chileno que se habría formado en Leipzig con Wilhelm Wundt. Posteriormente se hace un barrido histórico respecto de la creación de las primeras carreras de psicología en la Universidades de Chile y Católica, las cuales logran posteriormente su consolidación. Este texto se cierra con la dictación de la Ley General de Universidades, el año 1981, la que cambió radicalmente el escenario de la Educación Superior en Chile.

Este libro fue escrito y concebido pensando en quienes han pertenecido, pertenecen y pertenecerán de una manera indisoluble a la Escuela de Psicología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (EPUC), así como en quienes estén interesados en conocer más de la historia de la psicología y de las ciencias sociales en Chile. En el primer capítulo se aborda la etapa de formación de la Escuela desde la década de 1950 a 1973 y en el segundo se expone su desarrollo en el contexto del gobierno militar, las dificultades de este período y la consolidación alcanzada. La parte final describe el despegue en la investigación y la proyección nacional e internacional de la EPUC desde 1990 a la actualidad. Este libro es una primera aproximación a una visión global de la historia de la Escuela e intenta atraer y generar nuevas miradas, problemas, estudios y reflexiones críticas.
