1848 aparece como una de las fechas claves para interpretar y comprender la Historia de la Humanidad. Nunca anteriormente los movimientos revolucionarios habían alcanzado tal amplitud afectando al mismo tiempo a la mayoría de los pueblos de Europa. La complejidad de los factores que internvienen en su origen y desarrollo ha sugerido comenzar el trabajo con una síntesis de las principales aportaciones historiográficas: desde los autores coetáneos a los acontecimientos, como Marx o Tocqueville, hasta los más cercanos a nuestros días. En el análisis de las causas se constata la interacción y confliencia de los elementos económicos, sociales, políticos e ideológicos. Su evolución y desarrollo se contempla desde el punto de vista sincrónico, de modo que aprezcsa una visión completa d elo que ocurre en cada momento en toda Europa. La valoración final oscila entre la consideración del fracaso total si consideramos la historiografía marxista, al no haber conseguido el proletariado la conquista del poder político frente a la burguesía, que ha perdido su fuerza revolucionaria, y una visión menos negativa, por parte de aquellos autores que insisten en los logros de las revoluciones en los planos social y político: emancipación de los campesinos de Europa Central, pervivencia del sufragio universal en Francia y eclosión de los movimientos nacionales que, aunque de momento fracasen, ese fracaso no será definitivo, sino un punto y seguido en el proceso de formación de la unidad nacional.
