La filosofía cambió de rumbo con la obra de Michel Foucault. El pensamiento ya no debe alzarse en una pirueta hacia las ideas ni buscar en el interior de las cosas una forma. Tampoco tiene que recorrer la compleja dialéctica de lo concreto a lo abstracto ni seguir el camino de las relaciones sociales. Para Foucault todo resultaba más sencillo: la filosofía tiene que mancharse las manos, escavar hacia el subsuelo, tiene que ser una arqueología capaz de historizar y diagnosticar el presente en que vivimos. Para alcanzar su objetivo, esta arqueología huirá de universales, claves de inteligibilidad o nociones previas y analizará prácticas y discursos que constituyen el fundamento de los regímenes de poder que nos oprimen. Este proyecto, con la Historia de la sexualidad, se centra en las condiciones bajo las que se formaron los saberes, los sistemas de poder y los sujetos de la sexualidad. En tercer tomo, El cuidado de sí, Foucault problematiza y analiza «textos griegos y latinos de los dos primeros siglos de nuestra era» para hallar una mayor claridad sobre la doctrina del placer y las pasiones. Esta historia nos descubrió que la sexualidad ajena a lo normal no debe ser una justificación de la marginación social o la exclusión política, sino que puede y debe ser una de las principales barricadas desde la que iniciar una rebelión genuinamente emancipadora.

En 1976 Michel Foucault publicó el primer volumen de la Historia de la sexualidad, titulado 1: la voluntad de saber1 . Los planteamientos de este libro se encuentran en el contexto de sus investigaciones sobre las relaciones de poder que producen determinados discursos y subjetividades. Estas relaciones se distinguen de las relaciones de "dominación", porque, entre otras razones, están constituidas por resistencias que son intrínsecas e internas a ellas. En el último capítulo de la Historia de la sexualidad 1, recibe el nombre de biopoder una forma de poder que administra la vida. Esta modalidad de poder es contrapuesta a un "poder soberano" que, en lugar de gobernar la vida, simplemente dejaba vivir y manifestaba su poder al "hacer morir" a los súbditos desleales o, en general, al exponer su vida en guerras fatales. En 1984, casi una década después, Foucault publica el segundo y el tercer volumen de sus estudios sobre la sexualidad, 2: el uso de los placeres2 y 3: la inquietud de sí3. Estos dos volúmenes tardíos presentan algunos desplazamientos con respecto al primero. En la Historia de la sexualidad 1 son planteados los tipos de poder, sus estrategias, resistencias y dispositivos que constituyeron a un sujeto sexual —entre los siglos xvi y xx d. C.—. En cambio, en la Historia de la sexualidad 2 y en la Historia de la sexualidad 3 se estudia la problematización ética de los comportamientos sexuales que algunos "individuos" ejecutaron, a partir del cultivo y la modificación de su relación consigo mismos, en la Antigüedad griega (en el siglo iv a. C.) y romana (en los siglos i y ii d. C.)4. Pese a que en la Introducción de la Historia de la sexualidad 2 Foucault explica que modificó su investigación para analizar el surgimiento histórico de un sujeto de deseo (previo a la elaboración moderna de la noción de sexualidad), queda una tensión entre un momento en el que el individuo es producido y fijado a una subjetividad por relaciones de poder y otro momento en el que un "individuo" presupuesto se constituye a sí mismo como sujeto en prácticas que tienen una marcada dimensión ética.
