El comunismo no ha muerto; en cierto sentido, goza de envidiable salud. El colapso del Muro de Berlín y la desaparición de la Unión Soviética le asestaron un duro golpe, definitivo de acuerdo con ciertos diagnósticos, mas su memoria e ideales emancipatorios resuenan todavía en algunos ambientes y el lenguaje político lo reanima con intermitencia. Para hacer frente a la potencia ideológica de esta presencia espectral, numerosas voces se han unido en el variado, contradictorio y potente coro anticomunista. Reaccionario en esencia, éste ha dirigido históricamente ataques y diatribas contra distintos grupos y proyectos —sindicatos, bolcheviques, inmigrantes, artistas, guerrilleros, estudiantes y naciones enteras—, entablando alianzas, a primera vista inverosímiles, entre conservadores, liberales, anarquistas, socialistas, católicos, demócratas, militares y tecnócratas, según el tiempo, la circunstancia y el lugar. Tan viejo como el comunismo e inseparable de su trayectoria, el anticomunismo es una ideología muy nebulosa y acaso más difícil de aprehender que su antagonista. El comunismo y el anticomunismo deben estudiarse juntos para mejorar la comprensión de cada uno de ellos. Este volumen se ocupa del debate público mexicano en relación con ambos, en el entendido de que se trata de fenómenos globales que interactúan y se retroalimentan en espacios regionales, nacionales y locales.
