En P.R. finalizaron las remesas del Situado Mexicano a principios de siglo XIX, y nuestro primer Intendente de Hacienda, Alejandro Ram?rez, autoriz? el uso de dicha moneda para mitigar la carencia de moneda en circulaci?n. La moneda macuquina circul? libremente en Puerto Rico desde 1813 hasta el a?o 1857 cuando fue canjeada por moneda de cu?o nacional espa?ol. La moneda macuquina fue introducida en Puerto Rico desde Venezuela por inmigrantes que hu?an de las guerras revolucionarias. The intellectual scope and courage to contend with the largest puzzles of human existence and organization distinguish great social thinkers. Barrington Moore's Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy was a foundational work of historical sociology that influenced a generation of social scientists and, decades later, continues to be widely read and taught. Here, Moore takes up the same tools of historical comparison to investigate why groups of people kill and torture each other. His answer is arrestingly simple: people persecute those whom they perceive as polluting due to their "impure" religious, political, or economic ideas. Moore's search begins with the Old Testament's restrictions on sexual behavior, idolatry, diet, and handling unclean objects. He argues that religious authorities seeking to distinguish the ancient Hebrews from competing groups invented, along with monotheism, the association of impure things with moral failure and the violation of God's will. This allowed people to view those holding competing ideas as contaminated and, more important, contaminating. Moore moves next to the French Wars of Religion, in which Protestants and Catholics massacred each other over the control of purity, and the French Revolution, which perfected terror and secularized purity. He then combs the major Asian religions and finds--to his surprise--that violent efforts to eradicate the "impure" were largely absent before substantial Western influence. Moore's provocative conclusion is that monotheism--with its monopoly on virtue and failure to provide supernatural scapegoats--is responsible for some of the most virulent forms of intolerance and is a major cause of human nastiness and suffering. Moore does not say that the monotheist tradition was the primary source of Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism, violent Hindu fundamentalism, or ethnic cleansing in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, but he does identify it as an indispensable cause because it justified, encouraged, and spread vindictive persecution throughout the world. Once again, Moore has drawn on his comprehensive understanding of history and talent for speaking directly to readers to address one of the most crucial questions about human past and future. This book is for anyone who has ever heard the word genocide and asked why.

How do political institutions help promote prosperity in some countries and poverty in others? What can be done to encourage leaders to govern not for patronage but for economic growth? In this book, such distinguished political economists as Douglass North, Robert Barro, and Stephen Haber answer these questions, providing a solution to one of the most important policy puzzles of the new century: how to govern for prosperity. The authors begin from a premise that political leaders are self-interested politicians rather than benign agents of the people they lead. When leaders depend on only a few backers to stay in power, they dole out privileges to those people, thereby dissipating their country’s total resources and national growth potential. On the other hand, leaders who need large coalitions to stay in office implement policies that generally foster growth and political competition over ideas. The result is that those who promote policies that lead to stagnation tend to stay in office for a long time, and those who produce prosperity tend to lose their jobs. Este libro es un recorrido por diferentes modos de escribir la historia en una escala regional, proponiendo una serie de aproximaciones sobre los actores corporativos y las redes sociales del mercado de Guadalajara en la época colonial tardía. Partiendo de una reflexión historiográfica sobre el cambio de trayectoria de la historia económica mexicanista reciente, se abordan varios debates metodológicos, entre ellos, la articulación regional al mercado interno, la circulación de plata y la monetización de las economías premodernas, así como el nudo de los mercados representado por ferias y rutinas de circulación de importaciones, tanto europeas como orientales, a cambio de plata. Los textos se centran en el papel de una corporación comercial, el Consulado de comercio de Guadalajara, como bisagra entre la economía, la política y el tejido institucional del mundo tardo-colonial. Se discute el nexo entre gobernabilidad imperial y atraso económico en la época, debatiendo con enfoques deterministas sobre el papel de las instituciones premodernas. La escala de observación pone el acento en el protagonismo de actores institucionales como en la violencia disruptiva que influyó en nuevos modelos de gobernabilidad y consenso político.
