Historia natural y moral de las Indias, aparecido en Sevilla en 1590, es un tratado dedicado a la historia natural y moral del Nuevo Mundo. Es decir, a las costumbres y hechos de los indios. Para su Historia natural y moral de las Indias José de Acosta usó observaciones que reunió durante más de dos décadas. Asimismo nuestro autor recurrió a materiales de otros autores. En el prefacio dedicado al lector, Acosta nos habla sobre la finalidad de su obra y de su ideario científico: «Estuvieron tan lejos los antiguos de pensar que hubiese gentes en este nuevo mundo, que muchos de ellos no quisieron creer que había tierra de esta parte; y lo que es más de maravillar, no faltó quien también negase haber acá este cielo que vemos. Porque aunque es verdad que los más y los mejores de los filósofos sintieron, que el cielo era todo redondo, como en efecto, lo es, y que así rodeaba por todas partes la tierra, y la encerraba en sí; con todo eso, algunos, y no pocos, ni de los de menos autoridad entre los sagrados doctores, tuvieron diferente opinión, imaginando la fábrica de este mundo a manera de una casa, en la cual el techo que la cubre, solo la rodea por lo alto, y no la cerca por todas partes; dando por razón de esto, que de otra suerte estuviera la tierra en medio colgada del aire, que parece cosa ajena de toda razón. Y también que en todos los edificios vemos que el cimiento está de una parte, y el techo de otra contraria; y así, conforme a buena consideración, en este gran edificio del mundo, todo el cielo estará a una parte encima, y toda la tierra a otra diferente debajo.» La excepcional calidad de este texto explica la gran difusión de la que ha gozado. Ello es evidente en las numerosas reediciones y traducciones. Historia natural y moral de las Indias fue también una obra polémica. Actualmente, el trabajo minucioso de muchos investigadores, ha validado la autenticidad y el rigor del libro de José de Acosta. La presente edición de la Historia natural y moral de las Indias es una selección realizada por el profesor José Alcina Franch.
