The East End is an iconic area of London, from the transient street art of Banksy and Pablo Delgado to the exhibitions of Doreen Fletcher and Gilbert and George. Located east of the Tower of London and north of the River Thames, it has experienced a number of developmental stages in its four-hundred-year history. Originating as a series of scattered villages, the area has been home to Europe's worst slums and served as an affluent nodal point of the British Empire. Through its evolution, the East End has been the birthplace of radical political and social movements and the social center for a variety of diasporic communities. This reference work, with its alphabetically organized cross-referenced entries and its original and historical photography, serves as a comprehensive guide to the social and cultural history of this global hub.

The East End as an idea is known to every Londoner, and to many others, though its boundaries are vague. Alan Palmer's historical overview of the area (first published in 1989 and revised in 2000) takes its extent to be the traditional limits of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, Hoxton and Shoreditch, the docklands and their overflow into West Ham and East Ham. And at the heart of the East End lies Spitalfields, home to a transient, often radical and hard-working population. Though it is often seen as London's centre of industry and poverty, in comparison to the well-to-do West End, the East End has always been a diverse place: in the seventeenth century, Hackney was a pleasant country retreat; Stepney and the docklands a bustling world of sailors and merchants. The book traces the development of the area from these roots, through the nineteenth century - when the East End became notorious as the home of radicals, exiled revolutionaries and the very poor, its crowded streets the scene of murder, riot and cholera -to the bombing of the first and second world war; and the subsequent decline and regeneration of the twentieth century.

Lovely Bits Of Old England written by John Betjeman and has been published by Aurum this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-08 with Literary Collections categories.

John Betjeman began writing for the Telegraph in 1951 and continued to do so for a quarter of a century. During that time Britain underwent profound social and cultural changes. In architecture, grand Victorian edifices were pulled down to make way for gleaming brutalist monuments to the Future. In literature, a new generation of angry young men (and women) challenged convention head on. In music, pomp and circumstance gave way to the electric guitar. And in fashion, hemlines crept up. Amongst much of the population, however, such rapid change met with disquiet: a nagging sense that the New had displaced much that was wonderful in the Old. By turns eccentric, wistful and polemical, Betjeman’s writing for the Telegraph gave voice to this unease. From contemporary reviews – often refreshingly caustic – of novelists such as Ian Fleming, Nancy Mitford and J.D. Salinger, through prescient warnings about the threat posed to the English skyline by office blocks, motorways and concrete lamp-standards, to elegiac paeans to Norman churches and, of course, the gothic majesty of St Pancras station, Lovely Bits of Old England collects the very best of Betjeman’s contributions to the Telegraph for the first time. Taken together they offer a eulogy for what was lost and an impassioned defence of the past in the face of progress’s relentless onward march.

South Shoreditch lies just north of the City of London, at the centre of a band that has become known as the 'City Fringe'. The area's greatest architectural legacy arises from the furniture trade and for almost a century - from the mid-19th to the mid-20th - Shoreditch dominated the industry as the major centre of furniture manufacturing and wholesale selling to the domestic and export markets. Following the industry's demise in the 1980s, many of its buildings have been given a new life as offices, bars or restaurants and live/work units. Shoreditch's proximity to the City has now led to enormous development pressures and a serious threat to the architectural distinctiveness of the area from commercial clean-sweep schemes and piecemeal interventions. In 2002 English Heritage formed a partnership with Hackney Council, the Greater London Authority and other relevant agencies to present a co-ordinated response and a strategic planning framework for South Shoreditch. This highly illustrated publication draws upon the findings of a comprehensive appraisal of the character and significance of the area. It will appeal to local residents and workers, architectural historians, furniture trade practitioners past and present, conservationists, planners, and visitors to the area.
