Michigan's historic highway bridges are rapidly being torn down and replaced as they deteriorate or become unable to support increased traffic volumes and loads. While the state has the responsibility of providing safe bridges, historian Charles K. Hyde maintains that the state must also preserve many of these remaining historic structures to insure that future generations will have them to view and appreciate. In Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan, Hyde identifies Michigan's historically significant highway bridges within the broader contexts of American bridge design and construction in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book summarizes the improvement of highway bridge design in the United States and compares Michigan's experiences with national trends. To aid the reader interested in visiting the historic highway bridges of Michigan, regional maps show the location of bridges included in the text.

Designed first and foremost to be practical, bridges nevertheless are often breathtaking in their construction, combining function and aesthetics. The historic structures that span the Evergreen State's highways are no exception. These technological wonders are extraordinary by any measure, yet their stories have remained largely unknown. Conceived by visionary engineers and built by anonymous workmen, Washington's highway bridges are amazing triumphs of skill, and played a significant role in the state's history. Several, at the time of their completion, attracted worldwide attention and the praise of professional engineers, influencing the course of bridge construction. In their quest to compile the first comprehensive history of the state's highway bridges, the authors poured through the extensive records at the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), collecting definitive documentation and photographs from across the state. This magnificent book, including more than 100 illustrations, represents the culmination of years of study by many individuals associated with WSDOT and the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (Olympia).

Studied by a team of experts in the fields of history, bridge engineering, architecture, and computer analysis were 21 old truss bridges of historical importance located in Virginia. These old bridges are narrow and have low load-carrying capacities, making them targets for replacement and destruction. On a case-by-case basis, the bridges were investigated as to their potentials for strengthening and widening for normal vehicular use. Also explored were non-vehicular uses as for conversion into craft centers, museums, restaurants, housing, bicycle structures, and the like, at either the present site or a new one. The wide array of possibilities for continued use of the old bridges described in this report show that old bridges do indeed have much useful life left in them and it is not always necessary that they be demolished.
