« Monuments in gratitude » to the Red Army in Poland are among the most numerous and well-known commemorative structures from the communist period. This does not mean, however, that the history of their construction and existence has already been extensively studied and described. In post-communist Poland, the « monument heritage » is regarded as an important part of recent history of Poland or of Central-Eastern Europe, even though the topic still gives rise to much controversy. Dominika Czarnecka's book is the first attempt at a synthetic presentation of the history of monuments to the Red Army erected outside of permanent cemeteries in post-war Poland. The work was awarded a distinction at the Wladyslaw Pobóg-Malinowski Contest for the Historical Debut of the year (2014). The Polish-language edition was also among the nominees of the Polityka News Magazine History Award (Polish History Book of the Year) in the debut category (2016).

This volume presents various aspects of public history practices in Poland, alongside their historical development and theoretical reflections on public history. Despite a long tradition and variety of forms of public history, the very term "public history", or literally speaking "history in the public sphere", has been in use in Poland only since the 2010s. This edited collection contains chapters that focus on numerous practices and media forms in public history including historical memory, heritage tourism, historical re-enactments, memes and graphic novels, films, archives, archaeology and oral history. As such, the volume brings together the Polish experiences to wider international audiences and shares Polish controversies related to public history within the academic discourse, beyond media news and politically engaged commentaries. Furthermore, it sheds crucial light on the developments of collective memory, historical and political debates, the history of Poland and East-Central Europe, and the politics of post-World War Two and post-communist societies. Authored by a team of academic historians and practitioners from the field, Public History in Poland is the perfect resource for students from a variety of disciplines including Public History, Heritage, Museum Studies, Anthropology, and Archaeology.

Commemorating The Polish Renaissance Child written by Jeannie Labno and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-23 with History categories.

The study of funeral monuments is a growing field, but monuments erected to commemorate children have so far received little attention. Whilst the practice of erecting monuments to the dead was widespread across Renaissance Europe, the vast majority of these commemorated adults, with children generally only appearing as part of their parents' memorials. However, as this study reveals, in Poland there developed a very different tradition of funerary monuments designed for, and dedicated to, individual children - daughters as well as sons. The book consists of five major parts, which could be read in any order, though the overall sequencing is based on the premise that an understanding of the context and background will enhance a reading of these fascinating child monuments. Consequently, there is a progression of knowledge presented from the broader context of the earlier parts, towards the final parts where the actual child monuments are discussed in detail. Thus the book begins with an overview of the wider cultural contexts of funerary monuments and where children fitted into this. It then moves on to to look at the 'forgotten Renaissance' of central Europe and specifically the situation in Poland. The middle part addresses the 'culture of memory', examining the role of funerary monuments in reinforcing social, religious and familial continuity. The last parts deal with the physical monuments: empirical data, iconography and iconology. Through this illuminating consideration of children's monuments, the book raises a host of fascinating questions relating to Polish social and cultural life, family structure, attitudes to children and gender. It also addresses the issue of why Poland witnessed this unusual development, and what this tells us about the transmission of cultural and artistic ideas across Renaissance Europe. Drawing upon social and cultural history, visual and gender studies, the work not only asks important new questions, but provides a fresh perspective on some familiar topics and themes within Renaissance history.

This book provides introductory material about Roma history and culture in Poland, and an overview of the types, status, and condition of Roma-associated historical and cultural sites. The bulk of the book consists of summaries of information provided by Adam Bartosz in questionnaire form, based on site visits and interviews carried out in 2005. The book covers sites of martyrdom, sites associated with the lives of famous people, cemeteries, and settlements. Sites are arranged alphabetically within each category. The survey describes the sites, and gives some indication of their current condition and what work, if any, is taking place to improve their situations. The term "Roma" is used throughout this book instead of the more common "Gypsies," except in a few cases where translations of older inscriptions require the use of "Gypsy." The survey and report have made a considerable effort to differentiate different groups of Roma, and to indicate which groups are most associated with specific sites. Sometimes, the names of specific family groups are also given. The appellation "Sinti," which in common usage is sometimes used synonymously with the term "Roma," is sometimes used to refer only to Roma from Germany. It is used here sparingly, again mostly when an inscription clearly distinguishes between Roma and Sinti in some way, as is the case at the German World War II killing centers of Auschwitz and Belzec. In the text, place names are given in their common English forms when the place is well known (such as Warsaw), otherwise the Polish name is used. All addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses were correct at the time of the survey. Please note that these are, of course, subject to change.
