First published in the famous American Guide Series of the Work Projects Administration in 1941, Wyoming: A Guide remains a distinguished survey of the state, its centers of interest, and its history. Now issued in paperback for the first time, it can introduce to new readers the geographic spectacle and pioneer history that continue to shape the character of Wyoming. A new introduction by T. A. Larson, author of History of Wyoming, updates the Guide and evaluates changes seen in the state since the book was first published. Valuable to the resident as a reference to the state's many treasures, and useful to the tourist who wants to know more than the road signs tell, Wyoming: A Guide commemorates those who passed through to the West and those who stayed to forge a state in the heart of the frontier.

Environment And Experience written by Peter Boag and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-29 with History categories.

The pioneer battling with a hostile environment—whether it be arid land, drought, dust storms, dense forests, or harsh winters—is a staple of western American history. In this innovative, multi-disciplinary work, Peter Boag takes issue with the image of the settler against the frontier, arguing that settlers viewed their new surroundings positively and attempted to create communities in harmony with the landscape. Using Oregon's Calapooia Valley as a case study, Boag presents a history of both land and people that shows the process of change as settlers populated the land and turned it to their own uses. By combining local sources, ranging from letters and diaries to early maps and local histories, and drawing upon the methods of geography, natural history, and literary analysis, Boag has created a richly detailed grass-roots portrait of a frontier community. Most significantly, he analyzes the connections among environmental, cultural, and social changes in ways that illuminate the frontier experience throughout the American west. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. The Old Iron Road written by David Haward Bain and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In the summer of 2000 David Haward Bain and his family left their home in Vermont and headed west in search of America’s past. Spiritually, their journey began on a Kansas trail where the author’s grandmother was born in a covered wagon in 1889. Between the Missouri River and the Golden Gate, they retraced the entire route of the first transcontinental railroad and large stretches of the Oregon and California trails, and the equally colorful old Lincoln Highway. Following vanished iron rails and wagon wheel ruts, bumping down backroads and main streets, they discovered the deep, restless, uniquely American spirit of adventure that connects our past to our present. A superb writer and an exacting researcher, Bain conjures up a marvelous sense of coming unstuck in time as he lingers in the ghost towns and battlegrounds, prairies and river ports, trainyards, museums, deserts, and diners that line his cruise west to California. Bain encounters a fascinating cast of characters, both historic and contemporary, as well as memories of his grandparents and the journeys that shaped his own heritage. Writing in the tradition of William Least Heat-Moon and Ian Frazier, and with an engaging warmth and a deep grasp of history all his own, Bain has fashioned a quintessentially American journey.

This state-by-state collection of folksongs describes the history, society, culture, and events characteristic of all fifty states. Unlike all other state folksong collections, this one does not focus on songs collected in the particular states, but rather on songs concerning the life and times of the people of that state. The topics range from the major historical events, such as the Boston Tea Party, the attack on Fort Sumter, and the California Gold Rush, to regionally important events such as disasters and murders, labor problems, occupational songs, ethnic conflicts. Some of the songs will be widely recognized, such as Casey Jones, Marching Through Georgia, or Sweet Betsy from Pike. Others, less familiar, have not been reprinted since their original publication, but deserve to be studied because of what they tell about the people of these United States, their loves, labors, and losses, and their responses to events. The collection is organized by regions, starting with New England and ending with the states bordering the Pacific Ocean, and by states within each region. For each state there are from four to fifteen songs presented, with an average of 10 songs per state. For each song, a full text is reprented, followed by discussion of the song in its historical context. References to available recordings and other versions are given. Folksongs, such as those discussed here, are an important tool for historians and cultural historians because they sample experiences of the past at a different level from that of contemporary newspaper accounts and academic histories. These songs, in a sense, are history writ small. Includes: Away Down East, The Old Granite State, Connecticut, The Virginian Maid's Lament, Carry Me Back to Old Virginny, I'm Going Back to North Carolina, Shut up in Cold Creek Mine, Ain't God Good to Iowa?, Dakota Land, Dear Prairie Home, Cheyenne Boys, I'm off for California, and others.

The interdisciplinary uses of traditional cartographic resources and modern GIS tools allow for the analysis and discovery of information across a wide spectrum of fields. A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources navigates the numerous American and Canadian cartographic resources available in print and online, offering researchers, academics and students with information on how to locate and access the large variety of resources, new and old. Dozens of different cartographic materials are highlighted and summarized, along with lists of map libraries and geospatial centers, and related professional associations. A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources consists of 18 chapters, two appendices, and a detailed index that includes place names, and libraries, structured in a manner consistent with most reference guides, including cartographic categories such as atlases, dictionaries, gazetteers, handbooks, maps, plans, GIS data and other related material. Almost all of the resources listed in this guide are categorized by geography down to the county level, making efficient work of the type of material required to meet the information needs of those interested in researching place-specific cartographic-related resources. Additionally, this guide will help those interested in not only developing a comprehensive collection in these subject areas, but get an understanding of what materials are being collected and housed in specific map libraries, geospatial centers and their related websites. Of particular value are the sections that offer directories of cartographic and GIS libraries, as well as comprehensive lists of geospatial datasets down to the county level. This volume combines the traditional and historical collections of cartography with the modern applications of GIS-based maps and geospatial datasets.
