Re-creating life in past times to educate the public and the historical villages where role-playing takes place can provide teens with the opportunity to learn skills from bygone times, such as blacksmithing or cabinetmaking, and earn a living. Historical villages give people the chance to bring another time to life, using historical tools and wearing period clothing. Costume design, set building, and makeup artistry, among other jobs, are explored, as well as how the experience gained at a historical village can be applied to careers within the tourism and museum industries and in carpentry and acting.

It contains over seven hundred illustrations, including hundreds of previously unpublished pioneer photographs and early watercolors. Many detailed aerial photographs, few of them ever seen in print, some dating back to the 1930s, allow the reader to step back in time and view the original towns before modern developments brought about irrevocable changes in the townscape.Covering almost one hundred towns, villages and hamlets, Old Towns and Villages of the Cape not only examines the role of surveyors, and other factors, in their initial layout and subsequent growth, but also describes the formation of new drostdy districts, new Dutch Reformed church congregations, boeredorpe, harbor settlements and mission towns. Hans Fransen applies his extensive knowledge and insight to present the information, research and insights, most of it previously unpublished, in a very readable and accessible style. With its rich pictorial component, this invaluable reference book it is as attractive as it is informative and fits as well on a coffee table as it would in a collector s library.

Since 1819, more than 6,200 place (street and village) names divided into more than 3,900 name groups were known in Singapore. As part of Singapore history, place names known since 1936 are recorded in this book. Although place names are fairly static in nature, there have been more than 100 name changes.
