Historicising Heritage and Emotions examines how heritage is connected to and between people and places through emotion, both in the past and today. Discussion is focused on the overlapping categories of blood (families and bloodlines), stone (monuments and memorials) and land (landscape and places imbued with memories), with the contributing authors exploring the ways in which emotions invest heritage with affective power, and the transformative effects of this power in individual, community and cultural contexts. This interdisciplinary essay collection investigates the various interactions of people, feelings, and things throughout premodern Europe. It focuses on the period before mass production, when limited literacy often prioritised material methods of communication. The subject of materiality has been of increasing significance in recent historical inquiry, alongside growing emphasis on the relationships between objects, emotions, and affect in archaeological and sociological research. The historical intersections between materiality and emotions, however, have remained under-theorised, particularly with respect to artefacts that have continuing resonance over extended periods of time or across cultural and geographical space. Feeling Things addresses the need to develop an appropriate cross-disciplinary theoretical framework for the analysis of objects and emotions in European history, with special attention to the need to track the shifting emotional valencies of objects from the past to the present, and from one place and cultural context to another. The collection draws together an international group of historians, art historians, curators, and literary scholars working on a variety of cultural, literary, visual, and material sources. Objects considered include books, letters, prosthetics, religious relics, shoes, stone, and textiles. Many of these have been preserved in international galleries, museums, and archives, while others have remained in their original locations, even as their contexts have changed over time. The chapters consider the ways in which emotions such as despair, fear, grief, hope, love, and wonder become inscribed in and ascribed to these items, producing 'emotional objects' of significance and agency. This book analyses visitor responses to the interpretation of Aboriginal cultural heritage in Australian protected areas, focusing on Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory and the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area in New South Wales. It provides insights into the discursive features that structure various forms of interpretation of Aboriginal cultural heritage at these locales, ranging from on-site interpretative signage to audio tours available on mobile phone applications. It draws on visitors’ firsthand accounts of the experience of participating in Traditional Custodian led cultural tours and camps, and the visitor learnings that resulted from these. Based on extensive interviews with visitors, the author argues that visitor responses to these experiences both perpetuate and challenge settler-colonial assumptions about Aboriginal peoples and their cultures in both more urban and remote locations. The book provides insight into the forms of interpretation that foster visitor transformations, thereby advancing a politics of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and the types of interpretation that may hinder such transformations, by reinforcing settler-colonial discourses and affective states. The book is aimed at students and academics attempting to develop a more critical practice in relation to heritage interpretation, tourism, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage and settler-colonialism. It will also appeal to heritage professionals, cultural tour operators and agencies responsible for the provision of protected area interpretation, including both government sector and Indigenous organisations.

The Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM) of the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s emerged out of a particular set of economic and social circumstances in which women were unequally treated in the home, the workplace and in culture and wider society. As part of the WLM, women collected together in disparate groups and contexts to express their dissatisfaction with their role and position in society, making their concerns apparent through consciousness-raising and activism. This important time in women’s history is revisited in this collection, which looks afresh at the diversity of the movement and the ways in which feminism of the time might be reconsidered and historicised. The contributions here cover a range of important issues, including feminist art, local activism, class distinction, racial politics, perceptions of motherhood, girls’ education, feminist print cultures, the recovery of feminist histories and feminist heritage, and they span personal and political concerns in Britain, Canada and the United States.
