This volume historicizes the study of life-writing and egodocuments, focusing on early modern European reflections on the self, self-fashioning, and identity. Life-writing and the study of egodocuments currently tend to be viewed as separate fields, yet the individual as a purposive social actor provides significant common ground and offers a vehicle, both theoretical and practical, for a profitable synthesis of the two in a historical context. Echoing scholars from a wide-range of disciplines who recognize the uncertainty of the nature of the self, these essays question the notion of the autonomous self and the attendant idea of continuous identity unfolding in a unified personality. Instead, they suggest that the early modern self was variable and unstable, and can only be grasped by exploring selves situated in specific historical and social/cultural contexts and revealed through the wide range of historical documents considered here. The three sections of the volume consider: first, the theoretical contexts of understanding egodocuments in early modern Europe; then, the practical ways egodocuments from the period may be used for writing life-histories today; and finally, a wider range of historical documents that might be added to what are usually seen as egodocuments.

Early Modern Women Writers of Venice: Looking for Happiness explores the ways in which five women used their writing to challenge misogynistic views about female inferiority, develop a sense of agency, and form meaningful interpersonal relationships that would enable them to find happiness. They are the forerunners of later feminist thinkers. This book is the first full-length study of the happiness of women in early modern Italy. It focuses on five women writers who lived in Venice between the late fifteenth century and the early seventeenth century. It takes an interdisciplinary approach that combines methodologies from literature, psychology, philosophy, history, religion, and emotion studies, emphasizing the importance of studying the search for happiness within a specific cultural context. It contributes particularly to feminist studies that consider gender in the context of ideology and the exercise of power. It also engages with current studies of emotions by approaching them from the perspective of research in the field of positive psychology and self-determination theory. It considers how the process of writing enabled women to achieve autonomy, what they thought about happiness, and the extent to which they were able to achieve it in their individual lives.

Resorting to life narratives as a comprehensive umbrella term and embracing hemispheric American studies paradigms, this edited volume explores the interrelations between life narratives, the social world, creativity, and different forms of media to narrate and (re)present the self to see in which way these expressions offer (new) means of (self-) representation within cultural productions from the Americas. Creativity in the context of life narratives nourishes the act of narrating and propels among others the desire to link individual life stories with larger stories of social embeddedness, conditioning, and transformation thus pushing new forms of historiography and other forms of nonfictional writing. Accordingly, the creative impulse fuses individual and collective experience with a larger understanding of the social including the latter’s local and global embeddedness. The contributions in this volume analyze the ways in which the dynamics, tensions, and reciprocities between narrative, creativity, and the social world unfold in life narratives from the Americas. Redreaming the Renaissance seeks to remedy the dearth of conversations between scholars of history and literary studies by building on the pathbreaking work of Guido Ruggiero to explore the cross-fertilization between these two disciplines, using the textual world of the Italian Renaissance as proving ground. In this volume, these disciplines blur, as they did for early moderns, who did not always distinguish between the historical and literary significance of the texts they read and produced. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes ergründen systematisch, auf welchen Wegen und in welcher Form Ideen und Wissensbestände aus Übersee in die Dörfer und vermeintlichen Peripherien Europas gelangte und dort weiter zirkulierte. Welche konkreten Medien und Wissensträger waren in der Lage, eine Erfahrung von Globalität im Lokalen zu ermöglichen? Gab es gewisse Erfindungen und Ereignisse, die eine chronologische Entwicklung der Aneignung des Exotischen in der Peripherie erkennbar machen? Erklärtes Ziel des Bandes ist es, die scheinbare Dichotomie von Stadt und Dorf infrage zu stellen und stattdessen die Komplexität der Zirkulation exotischen Wissens aufzufächern. Die Fallbeispiele regen dazu an, sich mit der Geschichte von bislang zu wenig erforschten Orten Europas und ihren globalen Beziehungen zu beschäftigen und über den Ursprung unseres heutigen Verständnisses des Fremden und Exotischen kritisch zu reflektieren.
