Met dit boek krijgt de lezer een overzicht van vijfentwintig eeuwen geschiedschrijving van West-Europa. In het eerste deel, over de Oudheid, behandelt de auteur de historiografie in het klassieke Hellas, het Romeinse Rijk, het oude Israël en het vroege christendom. In een tweede deel overloopt hij de geschiedschrijving van duizend jaar West-Europese christelijke Middeleeuwen. In het derde deel wordt de uiteenzetting voortgezet van de Renaissance tot de eeuw van de Verlichting; bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar de weerslag van de wetenschapsrevolutie op de geschiedbeoefening. Ten slotte worden, in een vierde deel, belangrijke ontwikkelingen en vernieuwingen binnen de historiografie van de negentiende en twintigste eeuw onder ogen genomen. Al komen de laatste voorbije eeuwen, relatief gezien, ruimer aan bod, toch plaatst de auteur zich helemaal niet op een 'hodiecentrisch' standpunt.

Developed as an exploratory study of artworks by artists of Singapore and Malaysia, Retrospective attempts to account for contemporary artworks that engage with history. These are artworks that reference past events or narratives, of the nation and its art. Through the examination of a selection of artworks produced between 1990 and 2012, Retrospective is both an attribution and an analysis of a historiographical aesthetic within contemporary art practice. It considers that, by their method and in their assembly, these artworks perform more than a representation of a historical past. Instead, they confront history and its production, laying bare the nature and designs of the historical project via their aesthetic project. Positing an interdisciplinary approach as necessary for understanding the historiographical as aesthetic, Retrospective considers not only historical and aesthetic perspectives, but also the philosophical, by way of ontology, in order to broaden its exposition beyond the convention of historical and contextual interpretation of art. Yet, in associating these artworks with a historiographical aesthetic, this exposition may be regarded as a historiographical exercise in itself, affirming the significance of these artworks for the history of Singapore and Malaysia. In short, which history rarely is, Retrospective is about the art of historicisation and the historicisation of art.

This is the first text on historiography to adopt a comparative, global perspective for the modern era looking not only at developments in the West but at other historiographical traditions in East Asia, India, the Middle East, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa as well. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, the book examines the impact of Western ideas of history on historical writing elsewhere and their interaction with the local traditions in an age of imperialism and colonialism. The authors argue that Western ideas of history were nowhere directly adopted but were accommodated to long standing intellectual and cultural traditions facing the challenges of modernization in an increasingly global environment. The book follows these developments into the current period and discusses the criticisms of postmodernism and postcolonialism of the modern historical profession and the reactions and resonances of historians around the world today. Originally published in 2008, this is not a direct translation of the English edition but a careful revision and updating taking into account the discussions of recent years, With this in mind certain sections have been rewritten, particularly those dealing with global history, feminist and gender history, history and memory, Marxism, and Latin America.
