During his time as a curate and his early period as pastor in Lützelflüh, Albert Bitzius wrote out fair copies, and sometimes drafts, of his sermons. Over 500 sermons, including sermons for the annual Day of Prayer, and other specific occasions were archived in this way by the curate and later pastor. Only three sermons were published in Gotthelf’s own lifetime and even the previously most comprehensive edition offers only a small proportion of the surviving texts. Almost all these texts will now appear in a new four-volume edition. An edition of the lists of sermons also offers insights into the preaching of Pastor Bitzius which does not survive in written form. A volume of commentary will interpret the content of the sermons.

Cytherica written by Josef Chytry and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Family & Relationships categories.

Cytherica boldly introduces a new faculty of thought called cytherics to contemporary academic discursivities. It defines cytherics as the sighting and siting of an aesthetic-erotic, or «aphrodisian», environment. Building on the furthest extensions of aesthetics since the eighteenth century, cytherics develops both the aesthetic-political and aesthetic-erotic dimensions of the aesthetic tradition to formulate exciting new responses to the pressing issues of contemporary societies. While drawing richly on the background of German and European Hellenism, this book provides valuable new insights for those working in the areas of the aesthetic-political, critical theory, postmodernist discursivities, and dialectical speculation.

The Other Jewish Question written by Jay Geller and has been published by Fordham Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with History categories.

This book examines how modernizing German-speaking cultures, undergoing their own processes of identification, responded to the narcissistic threat posed by the continued persistence of Judentum (Judaism, Jewry, Jewishness) by representing "the Jew"'s body--or rather parts of that body and the techniques performed upon them. Such fetish-producing practices reveal the question of German-identified modernity to be inseparable from the Jewish Question. But Jewish-identified individuals, immersed in the phantasmagoria of such figurations--in the gutter and garret salon, medical treatise and dirty joke, tabloid caricature and literary depiction, church fa ade and bric-a-brac souvenir--had their own question, another Jewish Question. They also had other answers, for these physiognomic fragments not only identified "the Jew" but also became for some Jewish-identified individuals the building blocks for working through their particular situations and relaying their diverse responses. The Other Jewish Question maps the dissemination of and interrelationships among these corporeal signifiers in Germanophone cultures between the Enlightenment and the Shoah. Its analyses of ascribed Jewish physiognomy include tracing the gendered trajectory of the reception of Benedict Spinoza's correlation of Jewish persistence, anti-Semitism, and circumcision; the role of Zopf ("braid") in mediating German Gentile-Jewish relations; the skin(ny) on the association of Jews and syphilis in Arthur Dinter's antisemitic bestseller Sin against the Blood and Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf; as well as the role of Jewish corporeality in the works of such Jewish-identified authors as Rahel Levin Varnhagen, Heinrich Heine, Karl Marx, Max Nordau, Franz Kafka, and Walter Benjamin, as well as such "Jew"-identifying writers as Ludwig Feuerbach and Daniel Paul Schreber. The Other Jewish Question portrays how Jewish-identified individuals moved beyond introjection and disavowal to appropriate and transform this epidemic of signification to make sense of their worlds and our modernity.

Literature And Censorship In Restoration Germany written by Katy Heady and has been published by Camden House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with History categories.

The effects -- both inhibitory and creative -- of the 1819-1848 censorship on German-language literary writing. In 1819, the German Confederation promulgated the infamous "Carlsbad Decrees," establishing censorship standards aimed at thwarting the political aspirations of post-Napoleonic Germany's rapidly emerging public sphere. This most comprehensive system of state censorship to that point in German lands remained in place until the revolutions of 1848, and is widely acknowledged to have had a profound influence on public discourse. However, although censorship during the period has been the object of much scholarly interest, little is known about its precise effects on literary writing. This book redresses that situation through detailed studies of six works composed and published in different parts of the Confederation by three prominent writers: Christian Dietrich Grabbe, Heinrich Heine, and Franz Grillparzer. By analyzing successive versions of these works, the study illustrates the thematic, linguistic, and aesthetic constraints censorship placed upon their writing, as well as the variety of literary evasion strategies that it stimulated. It demonstrates that while censorship inhibited and distorted German literary writing, it also led to the emergence of distinctively complex and inventive modes of literary expression that came to mark the epoch. Katy Heady received her PhD in German from the University of Sheffield in 2007.

Weimar written by Michael H. Kater and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-28 with History categories.

Historian Michael H. Kater chronicles the rise and fall of one of Germany’s most iconic cities in this fascinating and surprisingly provocative history of Weimar. Weimar was a center of the arts during the Enlightenment and hence the cradle of German culture in modern times. Goethe and Schiller made their reputations here, as did Franz Liszt and the young Richard Strauss. In the early twentieth century, the Bauhaus school was founded in Weimar. But from the 1880s on, the city also nurtured a powerful right-wing reactionary movement, and fifty years later, a repressive National Socialist regime dimmed Weimar’s creative lights, transforming the onetime artists’ utopia into the capital of its first Nazified province and constructing the Buchenwald death camp on its doorstep. Kater’s richly detailed volume offers the first complete history of Weimar in any language, from its meteoric eighteenth-century rise up from obscurity through its glory days of unbridled creative expression to its dark descent back into artistic insignificance under Nazi rule and, later, Soviet occupation and beyond.
