Die Historische Bildkunde beansprucht den Rang einer historischen Grundwissenschaft; sie will nicht in Konkurrenz zur Kunstwissenschaft treten, auf deren Forschungsergebnisse sie mit angewiesen bleibt, sondern sie will interdisziplinäre Verrnittlungsarbeit leisten. Um Bilder als Quellen für historische Fragestellungen zu erschließen, braucht der Historiker neben seinem üblichen "Handwerkszeug" Spezialkenntnisse: kunsthistorische Informationen und eine Arbeitsmethodik. Beides zu vermitteln und auf eine systematische Erschließung bildlichen Quellenmaterials für die historische Forschung hinzuwirken, ist Aufgabe der Historischen Bildkunde. Ihre spezifische Leistung ist die Orientierung an der Perspektive des Historikers, der in den Bildern nach Antworten auf heutige Fragen an die Geschichte sucht. Den Beitrag eines Bildes zur Beantwortung einer geschichtswissenschaftlichen Fragestellung nennt Rainer Wohlfeil den "historischen Dokumentensinn", im Unterschied zu Panofskys "Dokumentsinn". Hinter dieser Begrifflichkeit steht die Abgrenzung der Historischen Bildkunde von der Ikonologie. Entscheidend ist, daß die Ikonologie nach dem Ansatz Panofskys bestrebt ist, dem Kunstwerk in seiner Gesamtheit gerecht zu werden und es als Ganzes, in allen Facetten zu interpretieren. Dagegen gibt die Historische Bildkunde den Anspruch auf, das Kunstwerk in seiner Gesamtheit zu erfassen. Sein Ansatz für die Arbeit mit Bildern kommt aus der Sozial- und Mentalitätengeschichte. Bilder können jenseits von real- oder personenkundlichen Zwecken als historische Quellen genutzt werden. Statuen, Bilder und Bauten können propagandistische und ideologische Botschaften verkünden. Sie haben eine Funktion bei der Legitimation von Herrschaft und Sozialdisziplinierung von Untertanen. Auf der anderen Seite spielen Bilder auch eine Rolle bei der Erhebung und Begründung sozialer, politischer, ökonomischer oder religiöser Forderungen. Kunstwerke können zur Erforschung von Machtstrukturen und sozialen Beziehungen herangezogen werden, sie bereichern damit die Mentalitätengeschichte um interessante Aspekte. Bildliche Quellen können auch auf Tendenzen hin untersucht werden, die in der Entstehungszeit der Bilder verbal noch nicht oder nicht mehr thematisiert wurden, die der spätere Wissenschaftler jedoch aufgrund seiner Kenntnisse über die historische Entwicklung und seiner Methodik möglicherweise erschließen und in Worte fassen kann.

Is there one visual culture or are there multiple visual cultures? On the one hand, it is obvious that images do not exist and cannot be understood independently. Rather, they are embedded in institutions and cultural contexts. This common ground suggests an understanding of visual culture as a singular phenomenon. On the other hand the plurality of pictorial representations - from Sitcoms to illustrations in childrens' books, from cartoons to satellite photos, from high art to everyday life - suggests the conception of visual culture as a singular phenomenon to be misleading. The visual world is a field of conflict and tension between self and other, mainstream and counterculture. The articles in this book include both theoretical reflections on the dialectics of visual culture(s) as well as case studies. The focus lies on examples from the U.S. American context - from the focusing on Native Americans as the 'Vanishing Race' in the 19th-century Photography to the TV coverage of the Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster in February, 2003. This book is therefore highly recommendable to both students and scholars of American Studies als well as those interested in the interdisciplinary debate on visual culture(s).

Taking up approaches from the fields of visual culture studies and visual history, Björn A. Schmidt undertakes a visual discourse analysis of films from the 1910s to 1930s.
